VAULT'S VERDICT:
If a good work-life balance at Chicago’s oldest firm sounds interesting to you, then take a closer look at Fitch Even. The firm balances a majority-remote hybrid work schedule with regularly organized social events, and the culture is collegial and collaborative as a result. Partners treat associates with respect, and the firm’s leadership is fully transparent in its decision making. The firm recently reduced its billable hour requirement to 1,800 while increasing compensation, a much appreciated change, and associates are eligible for a bonus once they meet the billable hour requirement. Virtually all of the work is substantive, whether in patent prosecution or litigation. The firm stays ahead of the curve with technology, and remote work is seamless. Although the firm has few formal wellness initiatives, the relaxed culture makes up for this. There are frequent formal trainings throughout an associate’s first year, and in addition, each associate is assigned a mentor. The partnership process is completely clear and realistic for those who wish it, and for those who do not, in-house jobs are readily available. Some amount of pro bono hours are credited to the billable hour goal. Diversity is good at the firm, and DEI is an extensive focus.
