Incredible summer experiences, strong work-life balance, and a first-rate pro bono program attract associates to Kramer Levin. Drawing from a broad range of law schools, the firm considers top grades, diversity, and work experience in hiring. Attorneys and staff are treated as equals in the positive, collaborative, and friendly work environment, and moderate socializing means that people can enjoy their personal lives. Partners care about associates personally and professionally and are quick to affirm their appreciation of work done well. Where there are gaps in formal training, senior attorneys welcome questions and go the extra mile to support associates. Lateral hires feel acclimated exceptionally well. Projects are high level and challenging, and assistance is available for more complicated matters. A work coordinator ensures the fair allocation of work assignments. Kramer Levin associates must bill a reasonable 1,950 hours a year to be eligible for a bonus, but once they do, bonuses—like their salaries—match market rates. Firm technology is adequate for associates’ needs, though some systems are outdated, and a helpful IT staff is there to troubleshoot any issues. Wellness efforts, especially a lifestyle spending account, are appreciated. Pro bono is a high point for Kramer Levin associates, as there are plenty of options, and there is no limit for hours that count toward the billable hour requirement. The firm does fine with diversity initiatives, including a chief diversity officer, trainings, and other events; however, hiring and retention of women and persons of color are lacking. Associates have mixed reports on the opportunities and the process for making partner, but counsel positions and external moves in-house, to other firms, or to the government are good options.
