About McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd
McAndrews, Held & Malloy is an IP boutique in the Windy City, with a team of attorneys, patent agents, and technology experts who handle high-stakes, complex IP litigation and billions of dollars of IP transactions.
Qualified Experts
McAndrews opened its Chicago doors in 1988, where it has remained a single-office IP shop. The original founding team of five attorneys has grown to a firm nearly 70 attorneys strong. Many McAndrews attorneys have backgrounds that supplement their IP practices and allow the firm of relatively small size to navigate all types of IP matters, such as undergraduate and advanced degrees in engineering, chemistry, and biochemistry. Nearly all of the firm’s attorneys are also registered to practice at the USPTO.
Science and Medicine Moguls
McAndrews offers a full slate of IP services, including design rights, IP litigation, IP transactions, patent prosecution, post-grant practice, and trademarks and copyrights. The firm’s main industry focuses include chemical, computer and electronics, consumer products, industrial and mechanical, life sciences, and medical devices. Clients range from small startup companies to major research universities and Fortune 100 companies.
McAndrews has achieved a number of notable successes in the medical and life sciences spaces. As a recent example, the firm secured dismissal of a trademark opposition proceeding before the TTAB that had been brought against AbbVie, its client, regarding the drug Skyrizi. In another matter, representing the medical technology company Stryker, the firm affirmed one of the largest enhanced damage awards in patent history in federal district court after the case made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court on Stryker’s petition for certiorari. The firm also guided client Osiris Therapeutics through the successful transfer of more than 250 patents and 90 applications throughout 20 jurisdictions worldwide when the company sold its stem cell business. As a leader in the space, McAndrews has also published the “Orange Book Blog,” covering topics related to pharmaceutical patents and FDA laws, since 2006.
In it for the Long Haul
McAndrews takes pride in its ability to not just hire great attorneys, but also to keep them. More than 70 percent of the firm’s attorneys have spent their entire legal career at the firm, and this includes some who have been with the firm since its inception in 1988. This is partially a reflection of the close relationships the firm builds with its clients, some who have been around for the long haul. No doubt, the firm’s appeal as a great place to stay is reinforced by the community it has fostered beyond billable work. The firm offers affinity groups, mentoring programs, and flexible work schedules to foster a diverse workplace. In the broader community, the firm partners with a number of local nonprofits and organizations to build relationships and offer pro bono services and support.
