Vault's Verdict
“Small but mighty,” though trite, applies to Morvillo Abramowitz—only 50 attorneys work in its NYC office, and they are highly regarded for their litigation work. The firm hires associates from top law schools who have either significant law firm experience or served federal clerkships. The work environment is pleasant among associates and younger partners, and these kinder partners take an interest in associates’ development and welfare. However, a small number of partners are more difficult to get along with and don’t socialize much with associates, while sometimes imposing unreasonable expectations. Little effort is made to onboard and welcome lateral hires, nor is much provided by way of formal training, though new associates are assigned both associate and partner mentors to provide guidance. Since most associates have prior work or clerkship experience, they are provided immediate, client-facing responsibility, part of the firm’s “on the job” informal training methods. Work assignments, doled out based on availability, are high-quality and associates are heavily involved in case strategy, which includes client interaction. Most projects involve only one partner and one associate. Morvillo Abramowitz associates work a lot of hours, even though there’s no billable hour requirement, and while salaries for junior associates are competitive, salaries drop below market for senior associates. Bonuses are below market as well. Firm technology and tech support are satisfactory but not great, and wellness programming is currently non-existent. Pro bono work is encouraged and hours are treated equally as billable hours. Diversity efforts are lacking—attorneys are largely non-diverse and there are no affinity groups. Associates feel it is not realistic to be promoted to partner at the firm, but they can pursue positions with the government, with other firms, or in-house.
