Supreme Beginnings

Nutter has deep roots in the Boston community. In 1879, a young Louis D. Brandeis founded the firm with fellow Harvard alumnus Samuel D. Warren. Although Brandeis would leave private practice for the judiciary—he was appointed to the United States Supreme Court after 35 years at the firm—Nutter has maintained its prestigious reputation through multiple name changes.

Community Commitment 

Current associates and partners at Nutter have big shoes to fill when it comes to pro bono. Founder Louis D. Brandeis is often credited with developing the pro bono tradition in American legal practice during the turn of the 20th century. The firm is a challenge participant in the Pro Bono Institute’s Law Firm Pro Bono Project, meaning it must certify each year that it spent three percent of the firm’s paying client billable hours on pro bono work. The firm also works with a variety of non-profits, providing legal services to victims of domestic violence, those seeking unemployment compensation, artists, and veterans, among other deserving Massachusetts residents.
