About Nutter McClennen & Fish LLP

Operating out of two offices in Massachusetts, Nutter McClennen & Fish LLP is a northeast staple. A full-service, midsize firm, Nutter has around 150 lawyers working in nine major practice areas across a dozen industries. The firm’s catch phrase is enough to set it apart from the competition: “uncommon law.”

Supreme Beginnings

Nutter has deep roots in the Boston community. In 1879, a young Louis D. Brandeis founded the firm with fellow Harvard alumnus Samuel D. Warren. Although Brandeis would leave private practice for the judiciary—he was appointed to the United States Supreme Court after 35 years at the firm—Nutter has maintained its prestigious reputation through multiple name changes.

Multi-Disciplinary Approach

Lawyers at Nutter bring a host of experience in such areas as corporate, IP, labor and employment, litigation, privacy and data security, private client, public policy, real estate, and tax. Among the firm’s clients are major global corporations, banks, and other public and private businesses, innovative emerging growth companies, entrepreneurs, and capital sources, as well as medical and educational institutions, foundations, and families.

The firm has a strong litigation department, which focuses on such areas as antitrust, bankruptcy, commercial litigation, construction, education, environmental, IP, labor and employment, product liability, real estate, securities, and white collar.

A significant number of the firm’s clients include banks and institutional lenders. The firm takes a multi-disciplinary approach, providing clients with a range of experience, including employment issues, litigation, M&A, restructuring, securities, tax, and more.

Community Commitment

Current associates and partners at Nutter have big shoes to fill when it comes to pro bono. Founder Louis D. Brandeis is often credited with developing the pro bono tradition in American legal practice during the turn of the 20th century. The firm is a challenge participant in the Pro Bono Institute’s Law Firm Pro Bono Project, meaning it must certify each year that it spent three percent of the firm’s paying client billable hours on pro bono work. The firm also works with a variety of non-profits, providing legal services to victims of domestic violence, those seeking unemployment compensation, artists, and veterans, among other deserving Massachusetts residents.
