VAULT'S VERDICT:
Though small in size by BigLaw standards, Schulte Roth & Zabel is big and does well in many areas. Associates come from T14 law schools and others near its NYC hub, and should have engaging personalities. Some corporate or funds experience is helpful. Office settings are friendly and familial, people enjoy socializing together, and staff is held in high regard. Partners work well with associates, include them in decision making, and care about teaching them. Formal training at the firm is robust, but nothing replaces hands-on learning and in-person guidance from more experienced attorneys. Work assignments for associates are level appropriate, with opportunities to take on higher-level projects and engage with clients. A central assigning system facilitates the fair distribution of work, though some partners prefer working with higher-performing associates. Schulte gives market-level bonuses to those who bill 2,000 hours, which associates feel is a fair standard. Salaries match the market as well. Some outdated tech systems can be problematic, though firm technology generally is good and is supported by helpful staff. The firm offers a full range of wellness benefits, including an in-house counselor and health apps, and is fully committed to pro bono work, as shown by a dedicated coordinator and by allowing up to 200 hours of billable time. Schulte tries to address diversity issues with a DEI committee, affinity groups, and 50 hours of billable credit for diversity activities, but retention and promotion of women and persons of color need significant attention. Promotion to counsel or partner is eminently possible, as are transitions in-house to financial services clients.
