VAULT'S VERDICT:

Shearman & Sterling challenges their associates with top-level work and the opportunity to take on early learning opportunities. The firm looks to hire attorneys who fit into the group dynamic and those who are eager to learn. The culture at Sherman & Sterling is collegial, and everyone from the top down is treated with respect. Partners at the firm appreciate the work associates perform on matters and take the time to provide feedback with a formal, annual review and informally as matters progress. Mentorship opportunities and training at the firm are highlights of working at Shearman & Sterling, with associates forming meaningful relationships with mentors. The newly instituted billable hour requirement of 1,900 hours is manageable for BigLaw, with work being evenly distributed among associates. Associates are paid market compensation, but transparency with bonuses has been an issue at the firm of late. Shearman & Sterling utilizes exceptional technology and provides a 24/7 knowledgeable technology team to work out any issues that arise in remote and in-office settings. Becoming a partner at the firm is doable, and the firm has counsel positions for those who don’t want the partnership path. Exit opportunities are also ample—in-house, with clients, or in government positions. Shearman & Sterling values pro bono, requiring each associate to log at least 25 hours of pro bono work each year, which is easy to accomplish due to the firm’s efforts to get involved in practically any pro bono matter an associate may find interest in. Diversity at the firm is valued, and diversity and inclusion efforts include various affinity groups and programs that are well-attended.
