Our Survey Says

VAULT'S VERDICT:

When hiring, Vedder looks for candidates with good grades from good local and national law schools. Prior business experience and a clear vision for one’s legal career set candidates apart. Vedder asks associates to apply to a practice group during summer program recruitment. Associates come into the office three days per week, and technology supports this hybrid arrangement. The day-to-day culture is collegial, friendly, and team-oriented, and associates often chat in the halls or offices. Firm-sponsored and some associate events are held regularly, and the firm respects associates’ personal time. In general, partners are approachable and emphasize collaboration, working one-on-one with associates in some instances. They assign work to associates based on ability rather than class year, and associate say that the work is appropriate for their level, ranging from document review to drafting and communicating with clients. Each new associate receives a mid-level or senior associate mentor, and many associates also find informal mentors. The firm has an annual requirement of 1,850 billable hours, which can include up to 100 pro bono hours. Compensation is market for first-year associates but slightly below market for others. The firm offers a guaranteed bonus for associates who meet the hours requirement and additional bonuses based on the number of hours that exceed the 2,000-hour threshold. Promotion to equity partnership is realistic for those who bring in business. The process is clear with formal criteria but takes a relatively long time, approximately 10 years. Administrative, support, and counsel roles are also available, as are exit opportunities to go in-house or lateral to another law firm. Notable perks include a technology stipend, wellness professionals who regularly check in with associates, gym reimbursement, day care partnerships, parental leave, and dinner delivery to the office.
