About Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor, LLP

The second-largest law firm in Delaware, Young Conaway's status as a leading bankruptcy, corporate counseling, and litigation firm transcends its small state and draws local, national, and international clients from corporations, state governments, stockholders, and individuals.

A Start in Delaware

Young Conaway was founded in 1959 by Hy Young, H. James Conaway Jr., Bruce M. Stargatt, and William F. Taylor. Over the next half-century, the firm grew in size and reputation. Today, the firm is home to more than 120 lawyers with offices in New York City and Wilmington, Delaware. Young Conaway’s lawyers have been recognized by the likes of Best Lawyers in America, and Chambers USA, Delaware Super Lawyers® and Rising Stars.

One of Bankruptcy’s Best

Young Conaway's bankruptcy practice is one of Delaware’s most highly regarded. The firm’s lawyers are among LawDragon’s 500 U.S. Bankruptcy & Restructuring Lawyers. Its practice focuses on six main areas: bankruptcy litigation, committee practice, cross-border insolvencies, debtor/corporate restructuring, and mass tort bankruptcies and settlements, as well as its portfolio company specialty group. Young Conaway has handled bankruptcy and corporate restructuring matters for an extensive client list that includes Borden Dairy Co., Bumble Bee Foods, LLC, GNC Holdings, Inc., Lucky Brand Dungarees LLC, and The Zohar Funds.

While it is best known for bankruptcy, it isn’t the firm’s only forte. Young Conaway has a strong corporate litigation and counseling practice focused on serving directors, officers, and other fiduciaries. The firm is also home to a busy intellectual property litigation practice, as well as a general litigation and trial practice. Among the disputes the firm handles are general commercial, insurance, environmental, mass torts, and securities litigation.

In addition, Young Conaway has been prominently involved in several influential Delaware Supreme Court cases, including Time Inc.'s acquisition of Warner Communications Inc. which created Time/Warner in Paramount Communications v. Time Inc. (1989), Paramount Communications v. QVC Network (1994), and Omnicare v. NCS Healthcare (2003).

Antiracism Alliance

In September 2020, the firm joined the Law Firm Antiracism Alliance (“LFAA”). Among LFAA’s goals is to organize “large-scale” pro bono projects through its member law firms to target racial inequality and injustice. The firm has also shown its commitment to communities of color and underserved communities through its contributions to such organizations as NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the Equal Justice Initiative, the Bryan Allen Stevenson School of Excellence in Sussex County, the Serviam Girls Academy in New Castle, and LYTE Scholars.

COVID-19 Update

Young Conaway has a proven track record of compassion and business acumen during economic and other crises, and we are uniquely situated to withstand such circumstances.  Accordingly, Young Conaway continues to pursue our strategic growth plan, having welcomed sixteen associates and one partner since March.  We swiftly pivoted our Summer Program to combine an in-depth virtual firm experience with the flexibility to join us in-person, on an entirely voluntary basis, following Phase 2 of our reopening plan. Our firm continues to provide such flexibility to all of its personnel based on individual needs and comfort level.

While we make adjustments in how we operate in these uncertain times, we will honor our commitment to provide the best legal services to our clients as well as our commitment to provide summer associates with real world exposure to the practice of law, and ultimately the opportunity to join us full-time.
