Employee Profile: Consulting Technology Manager
Name: Alina Klinova
Company: Deloitte Consulting LLP
I received my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a dual concentration in Information Technology and Leadership Change Management from Duquesne University, Palumbo-Donahue School of Business in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The blend of these two areas helped influenced my decision to pursue a career in technology consulting. During school, I also earned my Six Sigma Green Belt certification.
I was attracted to the consulting industry because it allows you to experience multiple roles in a short period of time without having to switch employers. You never get bored with what you do, because tomorrow you can be doing something new and even more exciting.
Prior to joining Deloitte, I also had the opportunity to intern at a number of financial service organizations all around the world. I traveled to Russia, Scotland, Hong Kong, as well as within the United States. My international work experience made me particularly interested in a global organization like Deloitte.
I have been with Deloitte for nearly 10 years, having joined immediately upon graduating from Duquesne University. At the moment, I serve a major Consumer & Industrial Products (C&IP) company based in the Northeast. I have been focused in the areas of finance and supply chain and have gained significant experience in project management, workshop design and delivery, executive communication and presentation, process design, application design, and testing.
My primary focus is on Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) and delivering this solution to clients across a variety of industries. My past experience and education has helped me in managing and delivering large, complex system implementations and process transformation projects. One of my favorite aspects of my job is managing the intersection of process, people, and technology so that I can deliver strong process-oriented solutions enabled by Oracle Finance and Supply Chain software functionality.
Describe a typical day as a consultant in Deloitte’s Technology practice
One thing I have learned about consulting at Deloitte is that there is no typical day! One day I could be creating project plans and presentations for clients, the next day I might be configuring Oracle applications, and the day after that I could be presenting in front of the client followed by a lunch with the CIO of a Fortune 500 company – all of this is a part of the experience of being a consultant at Deloitte.
Biggest challenge you’ve encountered during your time with Deloitte
I really enjoy working with clients and providing professional services, but travel and being a “road warrior” can be challenging at times; flight delays are just one example. I still try to look at this dilemma from a positive angle -- travel stories are always fun to share with friends, family and colleagues, plus you do get a lot of points which go a long way when it comes to taking vacation!
Another challenge that I have come across is that school and training can only take you so far; you need experience working with really capable and talented people because in consulting, you cannot prepare for every project, engagement, or situation you encounter. Every day you are faced with new or different challenges, and there is no instruction manual that will tell you exactly what you need to do to handle a particular situation – this intuition comes from the experience you build over time. I’ve found that at Deloitte, I’m always working with very experienced teams that help mentor me and that provide guidance in handling any situation that may arise. Deloitte is also very dedicated to investing in its people. As soon as you join the organization, you will go through training that will help you get more prepared for consulting and life on the road.
Biggest opportunity you’ve encountered during your time with Deloitte
I typically find myself as part of the team on very large, global Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system implementations. The fun part is that you get to work with people from all over the world, experience their cultures, and even taste some of the local foods.
When I first joined Deloitte, I was assigned to one such project. I had never worked with Oracle software before and was a little intimidated. A few weeks into the project I was put in charge of software testing and managing 50 resources scattered across Asia Pacific and Latin America. I was anxious at first, but then I thought about my college experience of being a tennis team captain and took what I learned from that experience and applied it to this engagement. I had to figure out how to get the team focused on doing what was needed, as well as communicating clearly with each other. At the end of the software testing cycle, I received a thank you note from the client because of how well I managed the client team – it made me feel really good.
Words of wisdom for those considering a career in technology consulting
If you are looking to launch your career or getting ready to graduate from college soon, I think that choosing Deloitte will be the most interesting experience that you will ever get for a few reasons, including: exposure to different industries and a variety of roles, the ability to travel and see new places, and a lot of flexibility and control in shaping your career.
Be prepared to join a fun, supportive family that is always there to support you every step of the way. Do not be fooled -- this is not an easy job! However, we have amazing people who will help you and guide you through the process; this is part of the reason why I have stayed with Deloitte for so long.
