HISTORY

In late 2001, with the prospect of their employer, Arthur Andersen, going out of business, a small group of consultants, including Kevin McCarty, requested a meeting with Dean Fischer to discuss the idea of starting a new consulting organization. The group met with Dean at a Chicago restaurant and proposed their idea for a new business—one that retained Andersen’s strongest aspects but did other things in a new and better way.  Through this and several follow up conversations, West Monroe Partners was born in April 2002.

One of the first things documented about this new consulting firm was our core values (actually, they were crafted on a napkin at one of the aforementioned meetings). In fact, a key theme you’ll see in our values ties back to our roots at Andersen, and that is the importance of people.  We unanimously decided that investing in our people—and making people a priority—would be essential for our new organization.

We also determined that while we were starting small, we ultimately didn’t want to be a small, boutique firm.  If we were going to do this, we wanted to do it the right way.  On that first day, we defined our strategy to target the middle market—recognizing an opportunity to fill a gap in this underserved segment. While getting our new firm off the ground was not the smoothest or easiest process, we kept our focus and have remained true to what we set out to accomplish.

We established our first office in Chicago in April 2002 and ended the year with 15 consultants. Since then, we opened offices in Montreal, Seattle, and Columbus in 2005; Toronto in 2006, and New York in 2010. Despite a very challenging economic environment, we grew our headcount by 20 percent in 2010, ending the year with 251 consultants. Not many organizations, in any sector, can claim that level of performance.
