For aspiring accountants, the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential remains one of the most valuable professional licenses in the industry. If you’re planning to take the exam or just starting your accounting career, you should know that the CPA test recently underwent its biggest overhaul in more than a century. Here’s a breakdown of what changed, and what it means for future CPAs.

Why the CPA Exam Changed

The accounting profession today looks very different from what it did even a decade ago. Accountants are now expected to understand data analytics, information systems, and emerging technologies such as AI, in addition to traditional accounting and auditing skills.

Recognizing this shift, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the National Association of State Boards of Accountability (NASBA) launched the CPA Evolution initiative, which led to the redesigned exam that debuted in 2024. The goal is to ensure new CPAs have both foundational accounting knowledge and deeper expertise in areas that reflect the modern profession.

In other words, the exam now reflects the reality that today’s accountants aren’t just number crunchers; they’re also data analysts, technology specialists, and strategic advisors.

The New Structure

The most visible change to the CPA exam is its structure. In the past, candidates had to pass four fixed sections: Auditing and Attestation (AUD), Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR), Regulation (REG), and Business Environment and Concepts (BEC).

Under the new model, the exam still includes four sections, but they are organized differently. Candidates must now complete three core sections along with one discipline section.

The three core sections consist of AUD, FAR, and REG. These sections ensure that every CPA has a baseline understanding of the core principles of accounting, auditing, and taxation. Instead of the former BEC section, candidates now choose one of three specialization areas: Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR), Information Systems and Controls (ISC), or Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP).

This structure allows candidates to demonstrate deeper knowledge in a specific area while still maintaining broad accounting competence. It’s worth noting that the discipline you choose does not restrict your career path. Once licensed, all candidates receive the same CPA designation.

Technology Is Now Front and Center

Another major change to the CPA exam is the increased emphasis on technology and data. The reason for this is that accounting firms are more often relying on data analytics, automation tools, and digital reporting systems. Now, candidates may encounter questions related to data analytics and financial data interpretation, information systems and cybersecurity controls, and the role technology plays in audit and assurance work.

This emphasis on technology mirrors what many accounting professionals experience in the modern workplace, as they often find themselves working with large datasets, automation tools, and advanced analytics platforms.

What Happened to the BEC Section?

One of the biggest structural changes was the elimination of the BEC section. While this section was removed, it didn’t completely disappear. Instead, many of the topics from the BEC section of the exam were redistributed across the remaining core and discipline exams.

For instance, certain management and analytics topics were moved into the BAR discipline, while technology and IT concepts were incorporated into the ISC and the core exams. This change helps align the test more closely with the specialized skills that modern accounting roles require.

Other Key Changes

Along with the new structure, several technical changes to the exam were also introduced. First, candidates now have 30 months to pass all four sections, when in the past they were required to complete the entire exam within 18 months. This extended timeline can be especially helpful for candidates who are balancing full-time work with exam preparation.

Certain mechanics of the test have changed as well. For starters, written communication tasks (essay questions) were removed. In the past, the exam featured an Excel-based environment, which has now been replaced with a spreadsheet tool. Finally, the new version of the exam emphasizes task-based simulations and applied problem solving.

The purpose of these changes is to test how candidates apply accounting knowledge in realistic professional scenarios.

What This Means for Accounting Students

For accounting majors and early-career professionals, the new CPA exam signals that technical accounting knowledge alone is no longer enough. Future CPAs are expected to understand data analytics, technology systems, risk management, and complex financial reporting.

In other words, the accounting profession is moving toward a model where CPAs act as strategic advisors who combine accounting expertise with technological fluency. For students, that means building skills beyond traditional accounting coursework, particularly in analytics, data interpretation, and emerging technologies such as AI.

The CPA Evolution model represents the most significant change to the CPA exam since it was introduced way back in 1917. While the exam still tests core accounting knowledge, it now better reflects the skills accountants need in a technology-driven business environment. Make no mistake—this doesn’t mean the exam has gotten easier, but it has gotten more aligned with the realities of modern accounting careers.
