Breaking into the consulting world is competitive, regardless of your background. Whether you’re an MBA, a PhD, or a recent graduate from a top-tier program, consulting firms receive thousands of applications each year from high-achieving candidates. The difference between landing an interview and getting passed over often comes down to how effectively you tell your story. Here’s how to put together a strong consulting resume and cover letter.
Think Like a Consultant
Consultants are trained to communicate complex ideas in simple, structured ways. As such, your resume should reflect that same mindset. Start with a clear, professional layout without any flashy designs or colors. Do your best to stick to one page (unless you’re applying to a research-heavy consulting role where a two-page CV is standard), and organize your experience by “Education,” “Professional Experience,” and “Leadership” or “Activities.”
Make sure you use consistent formatting. This might include using bold type for your role and organization, placing dates on the right-hand side, and keeping descriptions concise and results-oriented. It might be tempting to include exhaustive research details from your time in college, but a better approach is to focus on transferable skills such as problem solving, data analysis, project management, and collaboration. Check out these examples:
- Academic phrasing: “Conducted a study on modeling techniques.”
- Consulting phrasing: “Led data-driven research project applying statistical modeling to identify process efficiencies.”
The example of the consulting phrasing talks about the same project, but it will have a much bigger impact on the hiring manager.
Quantitative Examples
Consultants love data, and for good reason. Numbers give context, scale, and proof of impact. Whenever possible, quantify your achievements to show tangible results. For example, instead of writing “Helped streamline department operations,” try “Streamlined department processes, reducing project turnaround time by 25%.”
Even academic achievements can be quantified. Let’s say you led a research team of five or presented to an audience of 200 people. In either case, those numbers translate your experience into real impact—recruiters and hiring managers will immediately recognize this.
Highlight Problem-Solving and Leadership Skills
Consulting firms are looking for real problem solvers who can take the lead when necessary. If you’re early in your career, you can showcase leadership through student organizations, case competitions, or volunteer groups. For MBAs and PhDs, highlight research leadership, cross-functional collaboration, or mentoring roles.
When coming up with effective language for your consulting resume, a good philosophy is “Action > Impact > Result.” Check out this example:
- “Led a cross-functional team of five MBA students to develop a market-entry strategy for a Fortune 500 client, presenting recommendations that were later implemented in two markets.”
The statement above shows initiative, analytical ability, and collaboration—these skills are all incredibly important in the consulting world.
Tailor Your Resume
For the most part, consulting firms share some values, which might include analytical rigor, teamwork, and client impact. That said, each individual firm has its own culture and focus, so you’re going to want to tailor your resume to ensure that it aligns with said culture.
Start by researching the firm’s projects, industries, and language used on its website. Next, mirror that language subtly on your resume and cover letter. For example, if the firm mentions “transformational impact,” use that phrase when describing your contributions. Keep in mind that there’s a balance to be struck here—you don’t want your resume to be a long chain of buzzwords, so choose language that works best for your skills and experience.
Your Cover Letter
Your cover letter lets you make the case for why your academic and professional background translates to consulting excellence. Here, you want to start with a strong opening that connects your experience to the firm’s mission. Below is an example to help you get started:
- “As a PhD in neuroscience with a passion for solving complex human and organizational problems, I’m drawn to [firm name]’s data-driven approach to transforming healthcare strategy.”
Next, pick two or three highlights that align with what the firm values. Remember, your cover letter is an excellent opportunity to share things that aren’t on your resume, so avoid rehashing the same information whenever possible. Instead, consider focusing on your mindset or what motivates you. Check out this example of a second paragraph of a cover letter:
- “During my doctoral research, I led a team of graduate students to optimize a process that reduced experimental cycle time by 40%. This experience strengthened my ability to structure data-driven solutions and deliver measurable outcomes. I’m eager to apply these skills in a client-facing environment.”
For your closing, you want to demonstrate enthusiasm for the role at hand. A great way to do this is to mention specific details about the firm. Check out this example:
- “I’m inspired by [firm name]’s commitment to innovation and collaboration and would welcome the opportunity to contribute to your team’s success.”
Get Feedback
Before submitting your resume and cover letter, have them reviewed by someone who’s working in consulting or who has gone through the recruiting process. Hiring managers are trained to scan resumes in less than 30 seconds, so every line should earn its place. Getting feedback from an inside source ensures your story resonates with how consulting firms read applications.
Try to approach writing your resume and cover letter as if you’re putting together a consulting case. Define the problem (how you can add value), structure your answer (your achievements), and deliver it will clarity and impact.
