The ability to read and analyze job descriptions is critical to a successful job search. This means being able to relate your skills and experience to the skills and requirements detailed in the job description. If you’re short on time or you’re just starting off on your very first job search, ChatGPT can be an excellent tool when analyzing job descriptions, as it can assist in drawing comparisons between a job description’s requirements and your own skills and qualifications.

When fed a prompt that includes adequate information about the job description and your own skills and experience, ChatGPT will provide a rather long response that includes options for a cover letter, a resume summary statement, and bullet points that describe work history and relevant skills. Take a look at the following example prompt, along with ChatGPT’s response:

Example prompt: I want to apply to a product management position at a company that places special emphasis on collaboration, taking the initiative, and innovation. My background includes working with a cross-functional team in a fast-paced environment where I oversaw the lifecycle of several successful products. Can you help me align my work experience with the job listing’s requirements?

The job description specifically requests that applicants have experience with data analytics and research, prioritization, and strong resource management and strategic thinking skills. Taking into consideration my experience in leading cross-functional teams through several successful product lifecycles that increased revenue by 25%, how can I tailor my resume to match the requirements in the job description?

ChatGPT: Certainly! Here’s a strategy to tailor your resume and cover letter for a product management position that emphasizes collaboration, initiative, and innovation, while also highlighting your experience with data analytics, research, prioritization, resource management, and strategic thinking.

The first thing you probably noticed is just how much information ChatGPT provided based off a rather simple prompt. This can be great, but it’s important that you carefully review ChatGPT’s response because it might contain certain embellishments that could be misleading. For example, ChatGPT’s response included the following statement in the cover letter example:

  • I also took the initiative to streamline our product development process, which significantly improved our efficiency and productivity.

The example prompt made no mention of taking the initiative to streamline the product development process, so in this case an applicant can either keep the statement if they have examples to back up the claim, or they can omit this sentence from their cover letter. The point is, ChatGPT likes to say things that make you sound great, but without adequate information it may provide false information that could wind up getting you into trouble later on. For more examples of this, check out our previous blog on using ChatGPT to prepare for job interviews.

The same philosophy applies to the resume summary statement and bullet points that ChatGPT provides in its response. It’s entirely possible that you forgot to include certain information in your prompt and ChatGPT accidentally covered for you with its embellishments, so if this is the case you’re in the clear. You never want to be dishonest or outright lie about your skills and experience on your resume or any other part of your job application, as it will come back to haunt you in the future.

AI programs like ChatGPT can be helpful tools in your job search, but they’re not the be-all and end-all. ChatGPT is best used to provide draft materials for you to work off of, since it will often add unnecessary information or details that may not be true to your own skills and experience. The bottom line is, it’s great for learning how to connect your work history to job descriptions if you’re new to job hunting, and if you’re short on time it can help speed up the process of creating cover letters or tailoring your resume. All it takes is a little experimentation and some patience, and you can use ChatGPT as your own personal job search assistant.
