The first year of law school is overwhelming, and adding job applications to the mix can feel like a lot. However, with the right approach, you can be well-prepared for your 1L summer job search. Here’s how to get ahead of the game.
Build Your Résumé Early

Your résumé is the first thing employers will see, so start crafting it now. Highlight transferable skills from your previous experiences, even if they aren’t directly related to law. Make sure to include academic achievements and leadership roles in any student organizations.
Get to Know Your Career Services Office

Your law school’s Career Services Office (CSO) is one of the best resources for navigating the application process. Attend their workshops, schedule one-on-one meetings with counselors, and familiarize yourself with the tools they offer, such as résumé review and mock interviews.
Network with Alumni and Upperclassmen

Reaching out to alumni and 2Ls who have already secured 1L summer jobs can give you an inside look at the process. Ask them about their experiences, what they did to stand out, and whether they can introduce you to someone in the field you’re interested in.
Research Employers and Programs

While it’s early to send out applications, it’s not too early to start researching potential employers. Look into firms, public interest organizations, and government agencies that interest you. Some schools offer structured programs with specific employers, so make sure you’re aware of any deadlines or eligibility requirements.
Get Involved in Extracurriculars

Joining student organizations, moot court, or law journals will strengthen your application. Employers value well-rounded candidates who have demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and a passion for the law outside the classroom.
