Winter recruitment is often an overlooked opportunity for law students, especially with the classic focus on OCI at many law schools. However, a strong showing during this period can help you secure competitive positions. In fact, most firms have moved their recruitment timetables into the winter, and you may well fall behind if you aren't taking advantaged of these opportunities. Here are some actionable tips to maximize your chances of landing the position you want.

Polish Your Resume and Application Materials

Ensure your resume and cover letter are tailored to each employer. Highlight relevant coursework, internships, or leadership roles that align with the firm’s practice areas. Do your research on each firm you're interested in to ensure that your application materials line up with their practice in ways you will be able to discuss in some depth at an interview. Take the time to write unique cover letters for each firm. The National Association for Law Placement (NALP) advises customizing application materials to stand out in competitive markets.

Leverage Networking Opportunities

Attend alumni events, career fairs, or informational interviews over the winter break. Personal connections can lead to referrals and insight into a firm’s culture. According to Vault's own survey data, 85% of law firm associates that participate in the hiring process value candidates who proactively network.

Prepare for Behavioral and Case-Style Interviews

Many firms now incorporate behavioral and case-based questions to assess problem-solving skills. Practice responding to hypothetical legal scenarios to demonstrate your critical thinking and professionalism. You can do this via mock interviews, and most school career offices offer a service to not only help you prepare for a mock interviews but will actually conduct them for you. Follow Up Thoughtfully

After any interaction—be it an interview or networking meeting—send a personalized thank-you email. Reference specific topics discussed to leave a lasting impression. You'd be amazed how few candidates bother to do this, and how much of a difference it can make in separating you from the pack.

Stay Organized and Persistent

Keep track of application deadlines and responses. The NALP website remains an excellent resource for tracking the earliest dates most firms will accept application materials, and a good general rule is that the earlier you apply, the better your odds. If you don’t receive a callback, consider reaching out for feedback and reapplying during future recruitment cycles. Just be sure to do so tactfully and respectfully.
