Although hours can be long during the busy tax seasons and it can be difficult to take PTO, outside of busy season the firm offers unlimited PTO, summer Fridays, and hybrid work schedules, making it easy to achieve work/life balance. The firm’s salaries, perks, and benefits are competitive, and wellness offerings include step challenges, incentives to join gyms, and an employee experience committee that focuses on mental health, physical health, and financial health.

Cg’s staff is diverse—it hires people of all backgrounds and has an active diversity committee. The firm is also involved with several charities. As for Cg’s business outlook, the firm has a strong growth strategy in place, leadership regularly holds firmwide meetings about their plans, and employee morale is strong.

Hiring Process

“The interview process is great. Even the interns get multiple interviews to make sure the best candidate is hired. I believe the ideal candidate Cg is looking to hire is someone that has some experience in the field and someone who either has or is going to sit for the CPA exam. They want someone who is able to handle projects on their own and does not need help every step along the way. They also want someone who is going to fit in the culture within Cg. Personality is also an important factor.”

“We are always posting on LinkedIn and Indeed and using recruiters and many other tactics to hire more talent. Currently, the firm is hiring for manager roles and higher but are open to applications from all levels.”

“We have really stepped up our recruiting process, interviewing and getting involved at colleges earlier and giving out scholarships to accounting students. We are constantly communicating with the students.”

Interview Questions

“How often would you come into the office? Are you going to sit for the CPA exam? What are some of your strengths? What are some of your weaknesses? What do you like to do for fun? Some of the higher-level interviews ask candidates specific technical questions to test their knowledge.”

“My interview was very laid-back. It was more conversational and a way to get to know the firm.”

Internship Experience

“My internship was a very hands-on experience. Cg Tax, Audit & Advisory certainly puts their interns to work, which helped them see that I had potential and led to me being offered a full-time position. It also helped me grow as an accountant before I even started my entry-level position. The only negatives I would say is that sometimes it is slow for interns because Cg Tax, Audit & Advisory has a lot of complex clients that interns would not be able to work on. So, there is only so much work interns can do at their level.”

“Welcoming work environment, flexible hours, helpful team, lots of learning experience. Sometimes you have to reach out for work and wait for tasks (but I was offered shadowing opportunities when nothing was available).”

“Partners are very engaged in our career development and take a proactive approach in providing us with opportunities to grow. Leadership is looking for the next generation of leaders and providing us with the roadmap and assistance. Career development opportunities are limitless, and advancements are granted to those that can do the work and perform well.”

“Cg has an annual review process in which people can get raises, bonuses, promotions, etc. The annual review process is extensive and very important to Cg. However, I would like there to be a review every six months instead of an annual review, since I think a year is too long of a time to evaluate someone’s performance. In my opinion, there is too much recency bias when a review is only conducted once a year.”

“All team members have access to each other, and we encourage everyone to use this avenue to increase their learning capabilities. Our team members get training in soft skills as well as technical skills. We have great shadowing experiences with all team members the minute they start working for us.”

Quality of Life

“The firm does everything it can to provide the best work/life balance for their employees with flexible schedules and flexible options to work from home. Quality of life is great at this firm.”

“While busy season is a 55-hour minimum, it is easy to manage your time. Outside of busy season, we are offered unlimited PTO and are off every Friday in the summer. My work/life balance is great.”

“One of our best assets is our quality of life. It is embedded into our culture. We have fun at work. I believe our team members enjoy coming to work.”

“Cg offers summer Fridays. This means that we are off from the first Friday in June through the last Friday in September. This is a tremendous benefit working at Cg. However, we are only able to do this since we work more hours during tax season, which lasts between two and three months. They also offer a complete choice about how often you go into the office. Some people come in every day, some work fully remote, and most work a hybrid schedule.”

Salary and Benefits

“I believe Cg pays its employees a reasonable salary. However, my understanding is that salaries are less than other accounting firms. For instance, I believe if I were a senior accountant at another accounting firm, I would be making more than I am at Cg. On the other hand, I believe other accounting firms require their workers to work more hours than Cg requires us.”

“Compensation and benefits are great. But there could be more communication on how the bonus was reached.”

“Our health insurance coverage is very generous. However, compared to other firms, I don’t think my salary is competitive for a senior accountant role.”

“Salary is not competitive. But health benefits are good. And I’m happy they contribute to the 401(k) and give us life insurance.”

Wellness Efforts

“We have unlimited PTO and summer Fridays. We also have many walking competitions within the firm to help our well-being.”

“We have stay-fit programs and incentives to join gyms. We have contests that team members can enter every quarter—prizes are awarded to the winners.”

“We have an employee experience committee that focuses on all aspects of the employee experience, including mental health, physical health, financial health, etc.”

“Cg does incorporate mental health awareness and also has walking challenges with prizes as incentives.”

Community Engagement

“CG is a very charitable firm. We are very involved with United Way, and we even hosted our first annual cornhole tournament where the proceeds were donated to charity.”

“Cg hires people of all backgrounds. They just want good employees and look no further than that.”

“They have a diversity committee. They are also involved with several charities. We also bring in guest speakers.”

“There are very few people of color in the firm and no POC in higher positions.”

Business Outlook

“Cg is trying to acquire more high-end clients with complex work. They are transitioning away from the smaller clients that take up too much time with too little fees. They have a strategy in place to significantly grow their revenue by 2030.”

“We have team meetings The management team and niche leaders communicate to the team all aspects of our current status as well as our future plans Our plan has a growth rate of 12 percent annually. We believe we are positioned quite well based on the fact a lot of our competition went the M&A route.”

“There is a clear goal for the next six years of where the firm wants to be. The managing partner can definitely get us there, but at what cost?”

“We have several meetings a year to discuss goals, budgets, and projections. This helps employee morale a lot.”
