About Charlotte’s Web Holdings
Charlotte’s Web Holdings is a small pharmaceutical company which produces a number of commercially available CBD products, from gummies to tinctures to pet treats. Maintaining corporate offices in Boulder and Denver, with industrial hemp farms located in Colorado, Oregon, and Kentucky, this vertically-integrated company is, by many accounts, a science-driven workplace—if you’re looking for a mellow vibe, this might not be it. Charlotte’s Web products are manufactured in a secure FDA-registered facility and third-party-verified for Good Manufacturing Practices.
In the past few years, the product line has expanded, and with it, the number of staff and revenues: in 2019, the company grew from 180 employees to more than 300; meanwhile, revenue grew from $40 million in 2017 to $70 million in 2018, to $95 million in 2019. Publicly traded on the Canadian stock exchange since 2018, the company is highly supportive of CBD and hemp research into products that improve health and wellness, and industry observers have noted that Charlotte’s Web offers some of the most rigorous batch testing of any cannabis company in the world. For its employees, there are good benefits: a 401(k) with a 100 percent match for the first 3 percent, paid health/dental/vision insurance, paid time off, parental leave, wellness rewards, medical plans that cover fertility treatment, pet insurance, and a several other voluntary benefits.
The company is not named after the beloved children’s classic book: In 2008, when Colorado passed its medical marijuana law, the Stanley Brothers added marijuana to the crops grown by the family’s farm business. Ignoring the recreational cannabis market, the family focused on responsibly growing their proprietary non-GMO hemp genetics that would be made into premium, full-spectrum phytocannabinoid health and wellness products. A few years later, the family of young Charlotte Figi contacted the farmers for help: The little girl suffered from roughly 300 severe epileptic seizures per week, and physicians discovered that certain strains of medical marijuana were particularly helpful to the child. The Stanley Brothers went to work, and developed a low-THC/high-CBD crossbreed of marijuana and industrial hemp that showed potential for medical purposes.
In 2012, they received international media attention when the strain—now named Charlotte’s Web—reduced her seizures to just two or three per month. Currently, all of Charlotte’s Web’s products are made with that original strain of hemp, which the company calls “the world's most trusted hemp extract.”
