About Google AR & VR

Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) technologies are the next step in so many fields, from entertainment (having a personal 4-D ride in your home) to telecommunications (put on the special glasses, and now everyone is at the meeting) to things not yet imagined, and Google is naturally in the middle of it all. Companies are looking for talent, with Vox magazine reporting that demand for software engineers in AR/VR increased by 1,400% from 2018 to 2019.

It should be no surprise that Google looks for highly intelligent candidates, and Google AR & VR is specific employment at an already highly selective company. Software engineers must have the minimum qualification of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field, but some of the “preferred qualifications” are a Ph.D. in computer graphics, computer vision, image processing, applied mathematics, or a related technical field; four years of relevant work experience in software development, including C++; experience with one or more of the following: photogrammetry, stereo depth acquisition, geometric analysis, deformable object tracking, GPU programming, digital imaging, statistical analysis and/or machine learning methods; and knowledge of deep learning neural networks, including TensorFlow.

Some of the perks of working at Google are legendary (like free gourmet food), and it often seems as if the company bends over backwards to keep employees happy, especially at the Mountain View campus (dogs allowed). You’ll be getting the best 24-7 tech support possible and free membership at the company fitness center. Medical and so on is covered, and new parents are treated exceptionally: New moms get 18 weeks maternity leave, with secondary caregivers getting six weeks paid leave. If on leave, the employee’s stock continues to vest (and they continue to receive bonuses). Meanwhile, the new parents also get “baby bonding bucks” to assist with expenses like diapers, food delivery, and formula—and when parents return to work, there is free on-site daycare.
