Founded in 1857, Northwestern Mutual was originally known as the Mutual Life Insurance Company of the State of Wisconsin. The company exclusively sold life insurance policies up until 1969, when it began offering disability insurance. It added retirement annuities and long-term care insurance in the late 1970s and 1990s, respectively. In 2000, the company changed its name to the more familiar Northwestern Mutual. Its corporate headquarters is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Since its inception in 2012, Northwestern’s childhood cancer program has funded more than 450,000 hours of research by contributing over $35 million. The program also funds academic scholarships for childhood cancer survivors, with over 110 scholarships awarded in its first two years.
