About PayPal

Founded in 1998, PayPal is one of the largest online payment processors in the world. It was acquired by eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion and, by 2006, had added 10 currencies to its platform, including the Singapore dollar and Swiss franc. While PayPal was spun off from eBay in 2015 (but will remain a payment option for eBay shoppers until 2023), it continued its strong global growth, conducting two major acquisitions in 2018: Swedish payments startup iZettle for $2.2 billion, and the San Francisco-based Hyperwallet for $400 million. Most recently, PayPal has expanded into the cryptocurrencies market.

The perks and benefits that PayPal employees receive are extremely generous. Benefits include free lunches, no dress code, eligibility for insurance coverage from the date of hire, and distinct choices regarding medical, dental, and vision plans. Even pet insurance is offered. There is also abundant support for employees’ financial, medical, and mental health. In addition to maternity leaves, child bonding leaves and family heath leaves (to take care of ill relatives) are available, and the company offers a true rarity—a “sabbatical program” that offers employees, after five years of service, four weeks of paid leave.

PayPal is also very socially conscious, stresses inclusion and diversity, and has set high standards regarding emission reduction rates. The company’s medium-term goals include 100 percent renewable energy sources to power data centers by 2023 and a 25 percent reduction of operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 (from a 2019 base year). Additionally, PayPal’s “Give Time” program offers eligible employees, after one year of employment, 100 percent of base pay, for eight hours per year, the chance to volunteer at qualifying community-based organizations.
