VAULT'S VERDICT:
Ballard Spahr associates come from T100 law schools and schools in close proximity to the hiring office. Interpersonal skills are important, as people want to work with others who are hardworking, respectful, and supportive. Coworkers enjoy socializing together but not at the risk of infringing on personal time. Partners are courteous and invested in associates’ development, and they value associates in close working relationships. Onboarding training is extensive, but associates primarily learn on the job through informal training and mentorship offered by senior associates and practice group leaders. Laterals receive thorough onboarding and regular check-ins from mentors and firm leaders. Associates are given challenging and sophisticated projects right away, although they also handle lower-level tasks. Associates say that the 1,900-hour billable requirement is reasonable and that they enjoy some flexibility in location and hours; however, assignments are not distributed evenly, and associates are expected to be on call sometimes. Compensation is below market, and some associates wish that the criteria for discretionary bonuses were clearer. The firm is undergoing major transitions in technology by offering new software and new laptops this year, inspiring hope among associates who say that the technology needs improvement. Ballard Spahr supports a wellness committee and parental leave and provides counseling, child and elder care services, and the Calm app. Pro bono hours are billable and unlimited, so associates can take large projects and learn through these experiences. Advancement to counsel and equity partnership is realistic, and the firm assists those looking to go in-house, to the government, or to other firms.
