Our Survey Says
VAULT'S VERDICT:
Associates gravitate toward Ballard Spahr for excellent real estate and pro bono work, and appreciate the firm’s diversity efforts. Hiring criteria include academic prowess, work experience, and personality, and most associates come from law schools near office locations. The firm also considers applicant personality, as assimilation into welcoming and collaborative office settings where people enjoy social activities together is important. Partners employ open-door policies in efforts to mentor and offer guidance to associates, who feel like valued colleagues. This willingness to answer questions and help associates develop is augmented by robust training options like Ballard Spahr University, National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) trainings, and webinars. A comprehensive process helps laterals onboard effectively. Associates are given challenging, satisfying work, as well as opportunities to meet with clients and take on additional responsibilities. Lean staffing and an assignment coordinator help ensure that all associates get quality work, though partners often select associates based on past experiences. Ballard Spahr sets a manageable 1,900 billable hour requirement that allows attorneys to have personal lives, and compensation is commensurately below market, though discretionary bonuses are common. Firm tech is outdated and needs improvement, and wellness resources like counseling, exercise incentives, and apps are helpful. Pro bono work is a firm priority and highlight; attorneys are encouraged to contribute at least 50 hours a year, and unlimited hours count toward the billable hour requirement. The firm also does well in the area of diversity, with notable hiring, retention, trainings, and programs. Prospects for internal promotion to counsel are good, though making partner, which can take 10+ years, is more dubious. Associates can also move in-house, to other firms, or to the government.
