Barack Ferrazzano wants to hire people with the drive, charisma, and professional and academic record that qualifies them for partnership someday. Associates say that earning a promotion to income partner, then later equity partner, is a realistic goal. The firm is tight-knit, cordial, and relaxed, with some associates choosing to socialize outside the office. People stop by each other’s offices or go out for lunch throughout the week when they come into the office, which is mandated three days per week. The firm’s technology supports this hybrid model. Laterals are effectively integrated. Partners tend to be pleasant and understanding, often working directly with junior associates. Although the firm offers little formal training, associates say that the value that partners place on teaching makes them quality mentors. Partners review associates’ performance every six months, and the partnership communicates firmwide changes. The firm has a billable hours requirement of 1,850 per year, which includes up to 100 pro bono hours and a limited number of accountable hours for contributions to firm leadership, training, and client development activities. All associates in good standing earn a competitive salary for a midsize firm, and those who meet the hours requirement are eligible to earn a bonus. The firm also offers additional bonuses for logging 500 or more hours in a quarter. Perks include a health reimbursement account and tech and professional development stipends.
