About Barnes & Thornburg LLP

From its Midwestern hub in Indianapolis, Barnes & Thornburg has aggressively expanded to serve a large network of clients throughout the U.S. In addition to having one of the largest intellectual property practices in the Midwest, the firm's core practices revolve around litigation, business, and governmental services.

Thirteen is the Lucky Number

Harvard Law graduate Kurt Pantzer founded Indianapolis firm Barnes, Hickam, Pantzer & Boyd in 1940. In a spasm of reverse superstition, the founding attorneys formed the firm on September 13, establishing an office with 13 people and 13 rooms on the 13th floor of Merchants Banks Building, an Indianapolis skyscraper (by the way, the office suite and telephone number were both 1313).

Barnes & Thornburg adopted its current name in 1982, when Barnes, Hickam, Pantzer & Boyd merged with South Bend's Thornburg, McGill, Deahl, Harman, Carey & Murray, founded in 1926. Today, the firm has 19 offices across the U.S.

Experience Overload

Barnes & Thornburg has built business, insurance, litigation, and government service practices among more niche areas, such as forays into the technological worlds of data security and cyber-insurance law. The firm counsels across numerous industries, including agriculture and food, education, energy, entertainment, financial services, government and public finance, health care, life sciences, and manufacturing. Its clients have included pharmaceutical giants, like Eli Lilly and Co. and Roche Diagnostics, and such household names as 3M Company, Johnson & Johnson, Pepsi, Axon Enterprises, and Whirlpool.

The firm boasts a strong litigation practice, with experience in more than a dozen practice areas—from antitrust to commercial litigation to class actions, and much more. And the firm’s litigators don’t merely sit behind desks—according to the firm, they have tried hundreds of cases. The firm also boasts a trial consulting and jury research affiliate called ThemeVision LLC, with which the firm works to assess each trial and build trial strategies.

Another strength for the firm is products liability and mass torts. Barnes & Thornburg lawyers have experience handling matters relating to automotive, chemicals, consumer products, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals—to name some.

The firm’s Real Estate department is nothing to sneeze at either. Its real estate lawyers work on everything from community development and tax credit financing to land use and zoning to leasing to real estate development to real estate finance.

Writer’s Hats On

Lawyering isn’t the only thing Barnes & Thornburg lawyers do—they’re prolific writers as well. In fact, the firm boasts six different blogs, including ones focused on construction law, employment law, environmental law, labor, policyholder protection, and regulatory enforcement.
