Our Survey Says

VAULT'S VERDICT:

Carter Ledyard offers associates an agreeable work environment, pleasant coworkers, and manageable hours. Academic achievement and journal and work experience are hiring considerations, as is personality. Both attorneys and staff members enjoy social interactions with each other, though the number of activities is not overwhelming, and the environment is welcoming and friendly. Partners respect associates, welcome their input on case strategy, and encourage them to take additional responsibilities. Partners are great mentors who push associates to develop their skills. Formal training is primarily done through CLEs, but lean teams mean associates learn directly from partners, and in addition to foundational work (such as document review) that needs to be done, they tackle complex, challenging matters. Work assignments are distributed fairly and evenly. Work-life balance is achievable because there is no billable requirement, though bonuses are based on meeting monthly and yearly goals. Salaries are below market, but most associates feel this is a fair trade given the bonus opportunities and reasonable hours. Firm technology facilitates both office and remote work, and wellness is supported through concerned partners, a supportive culture, and work-life balance. Pro bono opportunities are available, and hours are treated equally to billable. Diversity initiatives resonate through a generally welcoming atmosphere. Transitions to counsel positions appear common, while making partner is realistic but more difficult, as it may depend on one’s ability to bring in new clients or managing existing clients.
