About Constangy Brooks, Smith & Prophete LLP
Constangy is a national labor and employment law firm that has been serving clients since 1946. Boasting a down-to-earth culture, the firm has close to 200 attorneys across 16 states.
Growing Up in ‘Hot-Lanta
Frank Constangy—known to his colleagues as ‘Mr. C’—established the firm in 1946 in Atlanta with partners Legree Davis and Mildred McClelland, who was one of the few female attorneys in Atlanta at the time. In 1950, Bill Prowell, formerly an attorney with the National Labor Relations Board ("NLRB"), joined the firm, and in 1961, the firm became Constangy & Prowell. After Contangy's death in the early 1970s, the firm fractured a bit but was reorganized by partners Lovic Brooks and Jim Smith as Constangy, Brooks & Smith and began to expand within the region to Birmingham, AL; Nashville, TN; and Columbia, SC.
At the Forefront of Labor & Employment Law
Constangy handles a range of employment matters, including employment discrimination, harassment, and retaliation; wage and hour litigation; workplace safety; affirmative action compliance; OSHA; workers’ compensation; and ERISA and employee benefits. The firm also counsels clients on developing workplace policies. Constangy is among the top 20 firms in Vault’s Best Law Firms for Labor & Employment ranking, and U.S. News & World Report has repeatedly ranked Constangy as a National Tier 1 firm in employment law, employment litigation, and labor relations. The firm has also been recognized by the likes of Chambers USA, Martindale-Hubbell, SuperLawyers, Law360, and The Legal 500. Among the firm’s clients are Fortune 500 corporations, small companies, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations across the country.
Diversity Dynamos
Perched atop various legal industry diversity rankings, Constangy talks the talk when it comes to fostering an inclusive workplace. More than 50 percent of attorneys and more than 40 percent of partners are women and people of color. These stats carry into firm decision making, as more than half of the firm’s Executive Committee is comprised of women and people of color. Notably, name partner Don Prophete was the first African American on the masthead of a large law firm. The firm’s accolades include being named one of Working Mother’s Best Law Firms for Women, one of the top 50 firms for minorities by The American Lawyer Diversity Scorecard, one of the top five firms for women by The National Law Journal, and the number one mid-size firm for women by Law360.
COVID-19 Update
We are still aggressively recruiting talented attorneys at all levels. We have been (and will continue to be) extremely flexible in allowing attorneys and staff to balance work and family demands during the pandemic.
