About Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP
Prominent Denver firm Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP serves both growing and established businesses in the Rocky Mountain West and beyond. The firm is known for its corporate finance and governance, mergers and acquisitions, natural resources, environmental law, real estate, and complex litigation practices.
A Taxing Start
DGS was founded by two Denver-based attorneys in 1915. Back then, the firm’s goal was to help clients navigate new tax laws that followed the passing of the16th Amendment. By 1964, the firm had grown far beyond taxes to secure a place as one of the top four Denver law firms. DGS has seen some impressive attorneys come through its ranks, including Byron White—former NFL player and Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
M&A in the Mountains
DGS has expertise in industries like energy, mining, technology, hospitality, private equity, manufacturing, asset management, and aviation. From a practice group standpoint, the firm’s corporate finance group is especially robust and represents parties on any side of a deal: sellers, buyers, management groups, private equity and venture capital funds, institutional lenders, investment banks, and independent directors. Within this practice is the firm’s heavy hitting M&A group, which according to the firm has handled more than $15 billion in combined domestic and international transactions.
When it comes to handling disputes, DGS has a litigation and trial practice that is no stranger to large verdicts, and the firm’s list of client victories stems from multiple areas of the law. Not surprising given the firm’s environmental forte, DGS has handled large toxic tort cases related to water, soil, air, and structure contamination, and has represented clients in natural resource disputes before administrative agencies and state and federal courts (including the U.S. Supreme Court). When it comes to non-nature-related cases, the firm has achieved recent victories such as securing a multi-million dollar verdict for a software company on contract-related claims and defending an insurance exchange company in a large class action.
One area where DGS casts a wide net is in the renewable and alternative energy sector—its western locale is ideal when it comes to helping these clients plan, finance, operate, and expand their energy operations. The firm works with a variety of clients specializing in the solar, wind, biofuel, geothermal, hydroelectric, and waste-to-energy industries.
Awarding Denver’s Finest
Every year, DGS presents the Richard Marden Davis Award—which goes to a leading Denver lawyer under the age of 40—in conjunction with the Denver Bar Foundation and the Davis family. The award is a nod to named partner Dick Davis, who practiced for almost 50 years and was a leader in the Denver community. The first award was given out in 1993 to then-Judge Celeste Quinones; today, the list of recipients has expanded to include governors, public prosecutors, general counsel, and private practitioners.
