With more than 650 attorneys in 27 cities throughout the country, Dinsmore & Shohl serves both local interests in areas like Ohio, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, as well as national business clients in corporate, transactional, finance, mass torts, and other matters.

Thanks, "Boss"

Four years after opening a small law office, Cincinnati lawyer Frank Dinsmore hired a recent Harvard Law School graduate named Walter Shohl, whom he would make his partner in 1912. Together, the two started to make a name for the firm by successfully defending legendary banker George "Boss" Cox in two separate trials in 1913. As the firm's reputation grew, so did its staff—by 2017, AmLaw listed it among the 150 largest law firms worldwide.

Across the Midwest—and Beyond

Dinsmore's midwestern base hasn't limited the broad range of corporate clients and individuals it represents, in industries including construction, energy, financial services, health care, manufacturing, natural resources, real estate, and technology.

Litigation is one of the firm’s strengths, and it has the manpower to back it up, with around 300 litigators at the firm. Its litigation experience is broad, including such areas as class action, employment discrimination, IP, mass torts, medical malpractice, securities, and workers’ compensation—among many others.

Dinsmore is also known for its work in labor and employment—which includes experience with international matters. The firm’s labor and employment lawyers tackle appellate work, contracts, employment discrimination, wage and hour, wrongful discharge, and more. Additionally, firm lawyers also wear training hats, providing guidance to clients on how to avoid liability relating to employment issues and how to comply with the ADA and FMLA.

Supporting Associate Success

Many firms have an onboarding program for new associates or a multi-day orientation, but Dinsmore takes it to the next level with a nine-month orientation program. Through this training program, new associates work with lawyers at the firm, including those in management, to learn the ropes. The firm has a formal mentoring program, and even offers a seminar on mentoring each year. This same focus on training occurs during the firm’s summer program, through which attorneys are asked to provide summer associates with feedback on each assignment, and summer associates participate in various forms of training, including panels and lunches.
