VAULT'S VERDICT:

Edelson looks for the best of the best in both its work and its people. Hiring is extremely competitive, and most successful candidates come from T3 law schools. In addition these high qualifications, candidates must be excited about plaintiff’s litigation and ready to hit the ground running. Associates describe Edelson’s culture as friendly, energetic, and informal, and it is not uncommon to see dogs playing in the halls. A casual open-door policy means that attorneys interact regularly in the office. Partners are engaged and respectful, although the firm’s push for growth has resulted in reduced face time with some partners. The nature of litigation can lead to unpredictable hours, but the firm is incredibly flexible with remote work. Moreover, associates can structure their own schedules. Edelson uses a bonus-heavy compensation structure, with starting salaries matching BigLaw market rates and bonuses increasing every year an attorney is at the firm. In total, the compensation is higher than that of BigLaw, but associates would like greater transparency from management about how bonuses are calculated. The quality of work is incredible, and even junior associates can expect to be involved in all aspects of a trial. There is very little formal training, but on-the-job training is excellent. Notably, associates must be proactive in seeking out mentorship and feedback. Because it allows unlimited remote work, Edelson has made technology a priority, continuously seeking out new and innovative tools, including AI. Formal wellness programs are not offered, but associates feel that their well-being is a priority for the firm. Edelson is very supportive of pro bono work; associates also note that much of their billable work advances social causes. Promotion to non-equity partner is very realistic, but the firm currently has only three equity partners.
