VAULT’S VERDICT

For associates interested in patent litigation and prosecution, Fish & Richardson should be at the top of the list. Candidates come from a wide array of law schools, but all must have a technical or scientific background and have proven themselves academically. Office settings are professional yet laid back and friendly, and coworkers enjoy socializing at regular events. This conviviality extends to associates and partners, with partners treating associates as valued colleagues. Formal training opportunities are plentiful and high quality, which is good because partners and supervisors often don’t take the time to provide guidance or feedback. Some lateral hires feel they would like more attention during the onboarding process. Work assignments entail some lower-level doc review but generally are more sophisticated and substantive, with associates encouraged to take on additional responsibilities as they’re ready. Associates must seek their own work in a free market system, though partners often give assignments to associates they know do good work. Salaries are market, while bonuses are merit based rather than lockstep. Firm tech and IT support are both excellent, and the firm offers many resources to support employee wellness. Pro bono work is supported and encouraged, and up to 200 hours can count toward the overall 2,000 billable hour requirement. Diversity efforts, including affinity groups, retreats, and recruiting, are well regarded, though mentorship and retention could be better. Associates feel positive about the prospects of making partner, yet have questions about non-partner roles. External moves seem to be limited to going in-house with tech companies.
