Fish & Richardson searches for attorneys with technical backgrounds and a passion for intellectual property law. Many junior attorneys at the firm have STEM degrees. The firm only hires associates seen as potential future partners. Therefore, junior partner is a realistic goal for attorneys who hit their hours target and perform well, and equity partner is a realistic outcome for those who bring in new business. Exit opportunities to in-house roles are also strong. The firm’s culture is relaxed, as exemplified by a casual dress code, and attorneys gather over firm-sponsored lunches and other planned and organic get-togethers. Although the firm provides flexibility to work from home and a tech stipend, many attorneys come into the office to attend firm-organized programs. Associates receive meaningful work through a free market system early in their careers, and they are encouraged to network with partners in different offices. Partners are approachable and happy to provide informal mentorship, and the firm gives new associates a formal mentor. Seminars, in-depth legal skills training, and an annual retreat for associate class year are offered. The firm requires associates to bill 2,000 hours to receive market compensation and 2,100 hours to guarantee a market bonus. It also offers reduced-hours arrangements to associates (for a lower salary) and above-market bonuses to top performers. The firm allows associates to credit 200 hours of pro bono work toward their billable requirement. Top perks include billable credits for working on client pitches, access to health advocates, and gym reimbursement.
