Our Survey Says

VAULT'S VERDICT:

With its strong international presence and cultural sensibilities, Freshfields continues to grow and impress in the U.S. Beyond law school attended and academic competence, the firm emphasizes cultural diversity, multilingualism, and an interest in international work in recruiting. Coworkers are helpful, laid back, and pleasant, and while they enjoy socializing together, there’s no pressure to sacrifice work-life balance. Partners and associates enjoy good, mutually respectful relationships, and partners care about helping associates develop. Formal training programs are helpful, but the best learning comes from engaged partners and senior associates. Lateral hires assimilate well both socially and professionally. Due to lean staffing, associates get consequential work, face time with clients, and high levels of responsibility. A staffing coordinator tries to share these opportunities fairly among associates, though assignments often are made based on experience and availability. Freshfields’ lack of a billable hour requirement contributes to overall job satisfaction, but associates still are expected to bill in the 1,800-2,000 range. Lockstep compensation and bonuses follow the market. Firm technology is dated and not innovative, so improvements are needed. Wellness efforts could be better, too, though associates appreciate access to the Calm app, gym discounts, and the firm’s supportive environment. Freshfields’ commitment to pro bono work is a highlight—unlimited hours count as billable (even though there is no true billable hour requirement). Cultural diversity is valued, given the firm’s international standing, and efforts related to hiring and affinity groups make associates feel good about how the firm embraces diversity. With ongoing and aggressive growth in the U.S., promotion to counsel or partner is achievable; otherwise, there are viable external opportunities, including abroad, with funds, banks, and corporations.
