Freshfields US LLP hires associates from T20 law schools and high-performing candidates from other schools who want to work on top-flight work for U.S. clients at a premier international law firm. Colleagues are friendly, supportive, and collaborative, with all attorneys and staff working together as a team. Partners are accessible and treat associates as valued contributors, and they are dedicated to associates’ professional development. Learning through assigned mentors and hands-on experiences is supplemented with training sessions on substantive topics, technology, and firm management. Laterals are welcomed into the firm effectively. Associates receive challenging assignments, and the work can push associates beyond their experience level, enabling them to take on additional responsibilities. Freshfields does not impose a billable hour requirement, although the target is 2,000 hours, which include hours spent in meetings, handling pro bono work, and taking advantage of professional development opportunities. Compensation reflects the BigLaw standard, with bonuses based on performance and contributions rather than billed hours alone. The firm’s investment in AI is lauded, and the technology accommodates remote work as needed. Wellness offerings include an annual stipend, wellness rooms, and well-being days with perks such as massages and smoothies. The firm encourages pro bono work, and all related hours count as billable. Making equity partner is difficult, and advancement to a counsel position is a more reasonable expectation.
