Our Survey Says
- “As summer associates we are basically treated like first years. We get real work for real clients and are really shown what it is like to be an associate.”
- “We received hands-on training on the firm’s internal processes and procedures, which made proper start-to-finish experience of work assignments much easier.”
- “I helped close a debt financing deal. I did not know at the time, but the lawyers on the deal remembered me when I came back and the deals they staffed me on.”
- “I had the opportunity to conduct substantive research, some of which made it into the final client memo. I also received substantive feedback on my work product, including detailed reasons from the senior associate as to why certain cases were or were not included in the client memo.”
- “This was the year before COVID, so maybe I look back more fondly. But the events were very well attended and a lot of fun. There was a table tennis competition and all levels of lawyers were very into it.”
- “Although remote, there were several group events scheduled, which allowed the three NYC summer associates to meet different groups at the firm. I also scheduled one-on-one calls, many of which lasted about an hour, with several partners, including the head of the litigation group.”
- “I think the camaraderie among summer associates is high, especially given the small classes. The firm hosts a fun and enjoyable end-of-summer event which is open to all lawyers and is one that I enjoyed a lot as a summer associate. When I was a summer associate, I enjoyed a high level of interaction with junior and senior associates whether it was through work assignments or lunches throughout the summer. Post-COVID, it seems there is less interaction amongst the summer associates and the junior/senior associates—possibly due to the WFH option and added caution for health reasons.”
- “We were remote for my summer, so all our events were virtual.”
- “Other than the fact that we are now in the office, there's not much of a difference.”
- “Thus far my experience practicing at my firm is in line with the expectations I had when I was a summer associate.”
- “I've been surprised by how friendly everyone is and how much of an interest the senior associates and partners take in my development as an attorney.”
- “I have been pleasantly surprised by how kind everyone is at the firm. The other attorneys, from partners to junior associates, are gracious and warm. The work has been interesting and has involved mostly legal research and some document review. The support staff are also loyal to the firm and many have been at the firm for decades.”
- “Every Friday morning, we were introduced to another practice group. The meetings were not boring and allowed us to get exposure to a lot of HHR lawyers.”
- “End of summer party!”
- “Definitely the table tennis competition. I was knocked out the first round but still had a great time.”
The Firm Says
Our summer associate program includes work on real legal matters, not "make-work," and those problems often involve far more than library research. In recent years, this has involved assisting at depositions, court proceedings and closings. In addition to expanding legal skills, participants have the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of client meetings, witness interviews, negotiation sessions and fact-gathering projects. Participants benefit from our extraordinary culture. The collaborative and truly warm environment is valued by everyone at Hughes Hubbard. We stand out from other highly ranked firms because of it. We focus on building a highly diverse team with a wide range of perspectives and backgrounds. This makes us better equipped to deliver creative and effective solutions to our clients' legal issues. We welcome new perspectives and approaches.
