VAULT'S VERDICT:

Associates from T14 law schools, top regional schools, and other firms join King & Spalding after completing a competitive hiring process. People in the office are collegial and collaborative, and they enjoy spending time together both during the workday and after hours. Partners respect associates and welcome associate input, and they are invested in associate development. Supportive mentors are assigned, and informal mentorship is established organically. Training is provided via regularly scheduled sessions and CLE, as well as acquired on the job. Laterals are integrated through trainings and welcome events. Associates assume responsibility for a broad range of meaningful tasks, and they receive guidance from senior associates and partners on more difficult assignments. Work allocation varies by practice group, with some distributing projects more evenly than others. King & Spalding requires associates to bill at least 1,950 hours [for bonus eligibility], with 2,000 billable hours per year the expectation, and 100 pro bono hours are creditable to this target. Compensation matches the market. Super bonuses may be awarded for high billing and other contributions to the firm. Associates say that the firm’s technology, including AI tools, is improving. Wellness offerings include seminars, incentive programs, and three free counseling sessions.
