Our Survey Says

VAULT'S VERDICT:

Marshall Gerstein is looking for quality in their hiring, using behavioral interview techniques to establish good work habits and personality fit. Attorneys socialize frequently, with Zoom options available during the pandemic, and the day-to-day atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. Overall, partners understand the associates’ value and treat them with respect; partners also provide extensive feedback on associate work, which associates view as valuable informal training. The billable hour requirement is considered reasonable, and the firm is good about redistributing work when necessary. Associates are also evaluated on efficiency, which some note can be difficult to control depending on the client fee arrangement. Projects are assigned based on both seniority and skill level, with interesting, substantive work available to all. Starting salaries are competitive but raises and bonuses can be small, which some associates note is a worthwhile trade for the better quality of life. Long term career plans include counsel and non-equity partner—both achievable with sufficient billable hours—though the path to equity partner is seen as less straightforward and involving more ‘soft’ considerations. Associates appreciate the firm’s recent move from Citrix to VPN, allowing for easier remote work. The firm’s wellness committee sends out monthly communications with helpful tips, and attorneys have access to free counseling sessions. The firm is unique in offering two-for-one billable hour credit for pro bono work for up to 50 pro bono hours, and associates feel the firm is committed to pro bono work. As for diversity efforts, Marshall Gerstein is currently in the pilot group seeking Mansfield certification for mid-level firms and working to improve their diversity efforts in all areas and has recently implemented a policy providing billable hour credit for certain diversity-related activities.
