Our Survey Says
VAULT'S VERDICT:
McDermott recruits academically accomplished associates from top law schools who will fit into the firm’s overall culture, which is welcoming and open. Attorneys and staff are friendly and work together closely. Partners value associates and their input, care about their professional development, and give them opportunities to grow. Training and social opportunities vary by practice group with some groups sponsoring office hours and training sessions. Both assigned and unassigned mentors provide hands-on guidance, which associates praise. Mentors and integration coordinators help laterals onboard effectively. Work assignments are meaningful and challenging, often above one’s experience level, with opportunities for contact with clients and opposing counsel. McDermott’s 2,000-hour billable requirement includes up to 100 hours dedicated to pro bono and 125 hours of professional development. Salaries match the BigLaw standard, and hours-based and discretionary bonuses are above-market. Despite some issues with security features slowing processing times, the firm technology is solid, and the firm is integrating AI tools and training. Wellness is prioritized through a wellness director, confidential access to mental healthcare, and “mindfulness” hours that count as billable. Pro bono work is a highlight, with publicized opportunities and 100 hours (and more with prior approval) that count toward billables. Associates see paths for promotion to counsel, non-equity partner, and equity partner. If they leave the firm, attorneys go in-house with clients.
