McGuireWoods hires associates from target schools through a competitive process that emphasizes excellent academic performance and interest in the firm. People in the office are friendly and collaborative, and outside the office, they enjoy socializing but not at the expense of their personal lives. Partners treat associates as colleagues and valued members of case teams, and they care about associate development. The firm is rolling out an associate’s academy as a more-thorough training initiative. Informally, both senior associates and partners are accessible for questions and feedback. Training and support for laterals help them integrate seamlessly. Work assignments are engaging and meaningful and become increasingly difficult as associates gain experience, but support is always available. Workflow varies by practice group. McGuireWoods imposes a billable requirement of 1,950 hours, and salaries for low and mid-level associates match the market rate. Bonuses, however, lag behind the BigLaw market standard. The firm embraces new technologies, both for remote work and the use of AI, to improve efficiency. Fifty hours of pro bono work count toward the billable goal, and the firm encourages and supports pro bono efforts. Making equity partner is possible but challenging, and associates can become counsel. The firm supports those who want to leave and go in-house.
