 VAULT’S VERDICT

Mintz associates can look forward to many aspects of firm work, including good rapport with partners, top-notch compensation, and meaningful pro bono matters. Candidates come from a wide range of law schools, but many of the usual criteria—grades and work experience—are considered during hiring. Coworkers are kind and supportive in laid-back but professional office settings. Partners treat associates like colleagues and care about their growth and success, which is evident in the formal and hands-on mentoring relationships at the firm. Mintz also provides a lot of useful, practice area-specific training for its associates. Transitions for lateral hires are handled effectively. Associate work assignments run the gamut from document review to deal negotiation, with greater responsibility given with guidance and direction. Partners often bypass the project allocation process to pick associates who they know or who actively seek work with them. Associates are expected to bill 1,900 hours (2,000 hours with time credited for non-billable matters included). These hours and Mintz salaries are aligned with industry standards, and 2025 will see the firm paying market bonuses. Recent changes to office technology have caused some problems and negatively affected efficiency. Buy-in for the firm’s wellness programs is lacking even though there are many programs that address both mental and physical well-being. Notably, the firm and associates are all-in for pro bono work, with firmwide commitment and 100 hours credited toward the bonus. Diversity initiatives, including hiring practices, affinity groups, and an annual retreat, at Mintz are effective and appreciated. The path to equity partnership is difficult and lengthy, and many attorneys who leave end up at other firms, in-house, or with the government.
