Hiring mostly from high-ranked law schools and regional schools around Boston, Mintz looks for well-rounded, team-oriented associates with a strong interest in the firm. Candidates meet the hiring decision-maker early in the process. Associates characterize the firm’s culture as social, cordial, and collaborative. Attorneys enjoy firm-sponsored events, such as happy hours, especially in the summer and around the holidays. Some practice groups hold regular lunches, and the firm offers a variety of meals to promote its hybrid attendance policy. Associates receive work assignments directly from partners in a free market system, which creates opportunities to ask for advanced work and client contact. Associates receive an assigned attorney mentor, the firm provides a budget for mentoring activities, and training is offered by individual practice groups. Mintz has a 2,000-hour requirement, which includes 1,900 billable hours and 100 creditable hours for pro bono work, special projects, or training. Salaries and bonuses follow the market, and associates must meet the hours requirement to earn a bonus. The firm supports working from home with a stipend, serviceable technology, and a great IT team. Associates see a path to non-equity partnership, which does not require a book of business. Associates may transition to counsel roles, and in-house and lateral roles can be successfully pursued.
