Lawyers at Mintz are generally happy with the collegial atmosphere at their firm and almost universally report that the people they work with are a huge positive. Interactions between associates and partners are respectful and positive, but associates do identify transparency from upper management as a growth area, particularly when it comes to promotion into the partnership. The firm has a billable hour target that associates find reasonable, but the tiered bonus structure generates some complaints around the amount of work required to secure a market bonus (although base salaries are market). Associates are satisfied with the quality of their work assignments, with nearly all of them reporting that their work is substantive and appropriate to their level. Technology is generally considered good, although some associates complain about feeling pressure to work in the office despite having proved their remote capabilities. Associates are aware of some wellness programs they appreciate, but they do complain about an always-on-call mentality. Formal training is available but often conflicts with billable work, while informal training is universally regarded as available and significantly beneficial. Many associates are not confident in their chances at partnership (partially due to a reported lack of transparency), but they also say most people never go to work at another firm—those who leave tend to go in-house or into government. Diversity efforts are moving in the correct direction, and the firm’s commitment to pro bono work is a great strength, with 150 pro bono hours creditable to the bonus thresholds and associates feeling strongly encouraged to engage in pro bono matters.
