Interesting work makes Munger Tolles highly desirable to candidates, and hiring is very selective. Successful candidates typically come with top grades from top law schools, and attorneys with federal clerkship experience are preferred. Munger Tolles attorneys enjoy a close-knit work environment that is relaxed and social, but not overly so. Associates appreciate the firm’s culture of transparency in which partners encourage open communication and are respectful of associates’ time. There is no set billable hours target, but the firm likes to see around 2,000 hours billed per year. While associates work hard, they also enjoy significant flexibility in where and when they get the work done. Compensation is market with above-market clerkship bonuses. Formal training is minimal, and learning is largely on-the-job, but support is provided, and associates are encouraged to take stretch assignments. Associates say that technology at Munger Tolles is at or above average for BigLaw, and the firm is open to innovating. The firm offers counseling options and generous leave policies to promote wellness for all. Pro bono work has significant buy-in from the partnership, and all pro bono hours are billable.
