Our Survey Says

VAULT'S VERDICT:

In addition to the relaxed dress code and work-from-anywhere policy, Quinn Emanuel associates benefit from excellent rapport with partners, quality assignments, and top compensation. High academic achievers at top law schools, along with hard workers who want to litigate, have the highest likelihood of being hired. Pleasant, supportive coworkers make office settings enjoyable, and a flat hierarchy allows associates to work closely with partners, who are collaborative and generous with their time. This generosity comes in handy because of the dearth of formal training at this firm; partners and senior associates, however, contribute with hands-on guidance and mentorship. Lateral hires must be go-getters and learn by doing because formal integration efforts are limited. Assignments range from basic document review to meaningful tasks such as taking depositions and attending court hearings, and associates are encouraged to push for more rigorous work through the firm’s free market allocation system. Favoritism and merit can impact assignments. Quinn Emanuel sets a higher-than-average billable requirement of 2,100 hours, which is mitigated by the ability to work from anywhere. Compensation matches the prevailing market rate, and associates can earn higher bonuses for working more hours. Firm technology is standard but adequate. There hasn’t been much buy-in or emphasis on wellness initiatives, especially because few people are in the office. Pro bono work is not a firm priority. One hundred hours of pro bono work is creditable to the billable hour requirement. Attention to diversity appears lackluster, with limited hiring initiatives and few activities put forth by affinity groups. Prospects for promotion to counsel positions are good, and making partner is difficult but possible. Solid external options include government and in-house roles.
