VAULT'S VERDICT:

When hiring new attorneys, Quinn Emanuel prioritizes self-driven candidates from T14 schools who are passionate about litigation. The firm is more flexible with respect to the law schools of lateral and clerk hires. Candidates should be a good fit for the firm’s laid-back, casual atmosphere. The firm does not have a dress code and allows its attorneys to work from anywhere, with many electing to work remotely, which the firm supports through a 24/7 IT help desk. Extensive remote work means the office is quiet, but associates who go into the office grab lunch or coffee together. Associates can also socialize through its cost-subsidized annual hike, in which the firm’s attorneys from around the world fly to an exotic location for an outdoor adventure. Associates say that partners take their input seriously and that partners provide development opportunities and exposure early in their careers, including trial experience and client interactions. The free market system allows associates to find the work that they enjoy and the partners with whom they want to work. Most training is informal and on-the-job, but the firm also has a program to expose associates to trial experience. The firm’s annual billable hours requirement is 2,100, which includes up to 100 hours for pro bono and marketing activities. The firm pays market salaries, and associates who hit the billable hours requirement receive a market bonus, with additional bonuses available for those who hit higher hours thresholds. Making partner is possible, and of counsel roles are available, as are exit opportunities to other firms.
