Among the many adjectives used to describe BigLaw, “laid back” isn’t often included in the mix—unless you’re at Venable. The creme de la creme of the Baltimore legal scene, Venable has expanded from its Mid-Atlantic roots to encompass 13 offices with over 850 professionals nationwide, yet still manages to be a firm at which associates report real work-life balance, genuinely friendly coworkers, and a defined culture of respect and supportiveness. And this culture isn’t limited to associates—partners treat associates as colleagues, creating a notably “nonhierarchical” vibe. Don’t be fooled by all the warm feelings, however, because Venable’s work is sharp and sophisticated. Thanks to its proximity to DC, Venable excels in its government practices—many Venable professionals are former regulators, senior government staffers, state attorneys general, and members of Congress—but associates in other practice areas won’t be disappointed by the firm’s top-notch work across the board. Compensation is somewhat below major market benchmarks, but associates are largely satisfied with the tradeoff for better hours and a viable path to partnership. Associates who don’t take the partnership route will likely find attractive exit opportunities, and counsel roles are also an option (although not necessarily long term). Sparse formal training initiatives are balanced by strong informal training opportunities and mentorship.  Technology and wellness initiatives leave something to be desired, but no more so than much of BigLaw. Associates wish that Venable would offer billable credit for diversity initiatives and are lukewarm about the 50-hour pro bono cap for billable credit.
