VAULT'S VERDICT:

Willkie Farr is a full-service firm that represents big name clients and expects its associates to provide excellent client service. Having top grades at a top school may get you an interview, but the firm wants associates who fit the culture by being collaborative, friendly, and respectful, in addition to being smart. Willkie’s culture is genuine, where socialization is fun, personal time is respected, and doors are open for a casual chat or to ask for guidance on a task. Partners and senior associates take the time to mentor lateral and junior associates and are respectful with assignments and deadlines. Training at the firm is plentiful, and mentorship happens naturally and organically, although formal mentoring programs do exist. Associates appreciate the firm does not impose a billable hour requirement, because it allows attorneys to work without competition or the additional stress due to the natural ebb and flow of work. Willke Farr makes sure the work is distributed fairly and evenly by “Assigning Partners,” and associates feel the firm genuinely cares about work-life balance. While there is plenty of work to go around, associates are paid well and receive lockstep bonuses. Many associates feel that partnership is a reality should they choose to pursue it, but with nearly 3,000 firm alumni, associates know future opportunities outside the firm are numerous and outstanding. Perks and wellness could be expanded at the firm, but associates like the quirky extras like cookie time on Thursdays and firm reimbursement for closing costs. Pro bono and diversity aren’t just talking points at the firm—the firm encourages associates to participate in both efforts and is strongly dedicated to social issues, creating a more diverse working environment.
