About Dick's Sporting Goods

Dick Stack was just eighteen years old when he had the first bright ideas for what would become Dick’s Sporting Goods. In 1948, Stack was working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, New York, and suggested to his boss to include fishing tackle in their product offerings. The owner was hardly receptive, and Stack decided to quit and pursue his vision of a sports and outdoors store that offered a wider array of products, a one-stop shop for all things sport. In search of comfort and advice, Dick Stack turned to his grandmother, who turned out to be the company’s first investor—he gave her grandson $300 to start his business.

What began as a shop predominantly oriented toward fishermen in 1948 has expanded to a leading sports and outdoor gear retailer. In 1971, Dick’s opened its second store, and between the late 1980s and early 1990s, the product offerings really took off, with athletic apparel, outdoor equipment, and footwear hitting the shelves. The company went public in 2002 and reached over 140 stores in 25 states that year. Key acquisitions like Galyan’s Sports and Outdoor Adventures and Golf Galaxy were also integral to the company’s growth.

Today, the company is led by CEO Lauren Hobart. Hobart is just the third CEO in the company’s history, joining a lineage of leaders who are committed to the long-term success of the company. Hobart has bolstered the company’s e-commerce strategies as well as improved Dick’s inclusivity and diversity efforts. Dick’s puts a huge emphasis on commitment and internal mobility. Employees at all levels, from store associates to corporate heads, have the opportunity to pursue new roles and are encouraged to communicate with their peers and supervisors about upward mobility. Dick’s is a team, and every teammate is encouraged to commit to the team wholeheartedly, promoting a workplace that fosters lasting careers and lifelong opportunity.
