A religious scholar in the United States who also works as a college professor may be a member of the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, or other unions. There are several noteworthy organizations for Muslim religious scholars. The North American Association of Islamic and Muslim Studies offers membership, hosts an annual conference, and publishes the Journal of Islamic and Muslim Studies. The International Institute of Islamic Thought is a nonprofit, academic, cultural, and educational institution that offers continuing education for scholars and summer programs for college students who would like to obtain a deeper understanding of Islam. The Council on American-Islamic Relations is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties organization. It offers useful information on Islam and guides to Muslim religious practices. The Islamic Society of North America is a membership organization for Muslims. It hosts an annual conference and offers a variety of youth programs.
