About 3M Summer Internship Program

3M offers the following internship opportunities:

Transformation, Technologies & Services (TTS): TTS interns have the opportunity to address relevant business concerns through both individual and team-oriented projects within functional areas throughout 3M, such as Applications, Infrastructure, Quality, Security, Data Intelligence, Master Data, Manufacturing and Lean Agile.

Design: Design interns, in partnership with dedicated design supervisors, have the opportunity to work on two to four projects that represent real design challenges that 3M’s businesses are currently facing.​

Corporate Engineering: Corporate Engineering interns work with the teams that are designing, building, installing and commissioning equipment and products for all areas of 3M’s business.​

Finance: Finance interns are given the opportunity to address relevant business concerns through individual and group assignments across all functions: Business Finance Counsel, Auditing, Tax, Treasury, Financial Planning & Analysis, Data Analytics, Mergers & Acquisitions and Investor Relations.​

Frontline: Frontline interns work in one of the 3M’s 20+ divisions in roles such as inside sales, field sales, marketing and business analytics.

Health Information Systems (HIS): HIS interns work on health care software solutions-including those that simplify management of health information, medical coding, payment and other important functions for our customers.​

Research & Development (R&D): As an R&D intern, you’ll work with senior scientists and laboratory management to develop advanced technologies and products in one of 3M’s corporate research labs or business group labs.

In addition to the work, business and social networking activities are available to introduce participants to 3M resources, networks and culture, such as:

  • Dedicated time with senior leaders to learn about the direction of the division and purpose in the work​
  • Presentations by fellow interns to learn about the projects they are working on​
  • Presentations from past interns on their experience and how to have a successful internship​
  • Fun offsite activities​
  • Informational interviews with other teams of interest​
  • Intern project showcase opportunities
Eligibility

Transformation, Technologies & Services (TTS) Internships Preferred Degree:
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited institution
- Preferred Major(s): Information systems, computer science, cyber security, computer engineering, software engineering, business analytics
- Preferred Academic Standing (If Bachelor Level): Prefer junior status, but sophomores are considered
- Preferred Qualifications: Interpersonal, communication and team skills; previous internship experience; and previous experience working in IT

Design
- Degree: Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher
- Preferred Major(s): Graphic design, industrial design, product design, user experience design, design management or design research
- Preferred Academic Standing (If Bachelor Level): Completed junior year or higher of curriculum at start of internship
- Additional Requirements: Strong coursework experience in illustration, visual branding, typography, photography, color and pattern; effective ideation ability + strong visualization/sketching skills; and the ability to provide a portfolio of design work that demonstrates design skills

Corporate Engineering
- Degree for Internship: Bachelor of Science
- Degree for Graduate Program: Bachelor's or master's
- Preferred Major(s) for Internship: Mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, structural engineering, architectural engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, computer science, data analytics or manufacturing systems

- Preferred Academic Standing (If Bachelor Level) for Internship Program: Sophomore or junior
- Preferred Academic Standing for Graduate Program: Senior in undergraduate or graduate school

Finance
- Preferred Degree for Undergrad Intership Program: Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree from an accredited institute
- Preferred Degree for MBA Internship Program: Currently pursuing an MBA or master’s degree from an accredited institute
- Preferred Major(s) for Undergrad Internship Program: Accounting​, finance, mathematics​, economics, business, information systems
- Preferred Major(s) for MBA Internship Program: Finance​, corporate finance​, economics​, business​, accountancy​, data analytics​, statistics​, financial mathematics
- Preferred Academic Standing (If Bachelor Level): Completed a minimum of four semesters by the start of the internship
- Preferred Academic Standing for MBA Internship Program: Completed a minimum of one year in a master's or MBA program by the start of the internship
- Preferred Qualifications for Internship Program: Demonstrates high ethical standards, leadership abilities, and interpersonal, communication and team skills
- Preferred Qualifications for MBA Internship Program: Demonstrates high ethical standards and leadership abilities; demonstrates interpersonal, communication and team skills; and exhibits strong financial acumen, the ability to translate data into meaningful financial insights and analysis, and superior quantitative and analytical skills

Frontline (Core Discipline Requirements)
- Degree: Undergraduate or graduate
- Preferred Academic Standing (If Bachelor Level): Junior or senior level at university
- Level of Education: Completion of two to three required classes in the major, minor or concentration of the position you are applying for, such as sales, marketing and analytics
- Additional Requirements: Legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g. H1B status)
- Other preferred qualities: Ability to analyze and solve complex problems; effective verbal and written communication skills; strong organizational and time management skills; ability to collaborate and work independently; and a strong aptitude and desire for a career in sales, marketing and/or business analytics

- Degree: Bachelor's, master's or PhD
- Preferred Major(s): Computer science, computer information systems, software engineering, mathematics, data science, health information management, statistics, data management, digital marketing, data security, business intelligence engineering, speech research science or technology management Optimized Operations (O2) Degree
