Burlington's internship program runs largely over the summer, with many placements structured around a 10-week schedule, though individual roles can range from about six to twelve weeks depending on function. The program is aimed at college juniors and seniors. Each intern is paired with a manager in a one-to-one relationship and is given specific objectives to work toward and demonstrate by the end of the summer, rather than a generic rotation schedule. Through these placements, interns develop practical retail skills such as merchandise planning, financial analysis, and vendor or market evaluation, along with a working understanding of the off-price business model.
Interns are placed in areas including buying, planning and allocation, finance, ecommerce, and IT, working alongside functional leaders to learn how a retailer sources, prices, and moves merchandise. Structured elements of the program include leadership development seminars, classroom-style training in retail math and Microsoft Excel, a trip to market in a large city, and tours of stores and distribution centers, giving interns visibility into operations beyond their individual assignment. Peer social activities and community service projects are also built into the summer to build cohort connections.
