Duke has a beautiful campus, staff works tirelessly career placement, and you graduate with an unbeatable network

Downers

All in all, the student body leaves something to be desired unless you can't enough cookie cutter cool guys

Comments

I had actually committed to UNC, but changed my mind in the late summer and wrote Duke Law admissions saying that if I was offered admission, I'd unhesitatingly accept. I got in, and with a scholarship.

Duke has top professors, brilliant students, and amazing job opportunities.

Downers

It's a small school, however you get to know your peers and make connections more easily than at a larger institution.

Comments

If securing employment in either biglaw or the government is your top priority, then Duke Law is the right place for you.

People here are very friendly. Super nice environment for research and study. High employment rate. Truly international.

Downers

A little bit far from most entertainment places. Need driving. Hot and humid in summer.

Engaging and dedicated professors and staff who remain dedicated to both student and alumni success.

Downers

There has been a lack of diversity within the entering classes for several years now.

Comments

Collaborative environment where cutthroat competition is not encouraged. Students receive excellent training and great practical skills and experience while having fun and enjoying law school.

“Best Decision Ever”

1) Dedicated Faculty

2) Dedicated Career Counselling

3) Collegiate Atmosphere

Duke's small class size definitely allows students to blossom and develop meaningful relationships with their colleagues, faculty, and staff. I personally went through a few tough times when it came to adjusting to life in the U.S. and also with my job situation. That's when the wonderful Duke community stepped up with their love and support - and the situation was resolved to a better end.

Downers

The social life can be quite restricted to the people in the law school - this can be either good or bad depending how you look at it.

Because everyone knows everyone, reputation is everything.

“Great expereience.”

small size of the class lets you really know each other and the professors.

Downers

Clerkship advising at least when i went there could have been better and more systematized.

Think about whether you want to be in the south where you definitely need a car.

“Decent education for the price”
August 2017FORMER STUDENT

The clinic options are fairly robust, financially well-supported, and staffed with high quality attorneys. There are numerous options for being on a journal that have a wide range of subjects. Duke puts a lot of resources behind OCI prep and recruitment, as the school should. Duke is quite generous with financial aid.

Downers

The introductory classes are absurdly large and impersonal--you are basically a number and your entire grade is based on a single exam. More sophisticated schools have realized that this is a terrible teaching model, but Duke has no interest in being innovative or in spending the extra resources to provide a higher quality education. The school is also extremely snobby--if you do well your first year the administration will bend over backwards for you. If you slip through the cracks you will have to fight for everything. For example, I was applying for clerkships and could not even get the clerkship person to call me back. Friends who were at the top of the class were getting phone calls from the same person pressuring them to apply. I ended up getting a clerkship with a district judge in one of the most competitive districts in the country. Duke makes no effort to place people in the West Coast markets. Other southern schools like UVA conduct West Coast recruiting panels and maintain active alumni networks.

Comments

If saving money is your greatest concern and you get a generous financial aid offer, then Duke may be the place for you.

Faculty

Alumni engagement

Student quality

The law school is one of the strongest schools at the university.

Downers

There is nothing I would say that dislike about Duke Law School.

Comments

Students considering Duke Law should appreciate the importance of a welcoming environment and good weather which is unique to Duke among the top 14 schools.

“Strong academics in a small-school environment”
February 2017FORMER STUDENT
Uppers

Dedicated professors, interesting classes, strong sense of community, inexpensive and fun place to live. TAs do not teach classes. Small graduating class. Virtually everyone gets a legal job upon graduation. It helps that not everyone wants to find work in the same region.

Downers

Not very diverse racially, but perhaps one of the most diverse politically (particularly among students). Expensive tuition and no scholarships available for current students (only offered as part of admission). 1L class sizes are fairly large.

Comments

Duke Law is full of smart and dedicated professors. There is a lot going on socially and academically, both in and out of the law school itself. A bunch of people successfully do dual degrees (typically LLM, MBA or MA).
