The quality and type of classes varies immensely. I have had few experiences where professors rely solely on the Socratic method. Lectures are large and impersonal; seminars are intimate and encourage discussion. Academic advising feels non-existent. NYU has a number of research positions for students as well as clinics and study abroad opportunities. Grading is on a sharp curve and feels quite arbitrary. The 1L Lawyering program is good because of its multidisciplinary approach and ungraded status and 1L sections seem to be treated to one notable professor per section each semester.

It's New York: high cost of living, lots to eat, see, and do. NYU provides great oncampus housing, computer labs, facilities, library, etc. The Village is a pretty safe location.

NYU allowed for a common application through LSAC with a requisite personal statement, resume, and several letters of recommendation. NYU also has unique application questions and essays for students interested in various scholarships. My experience was the NYU application was that it was no more difficult than an average law school, and easier than some of the more specific schools.

The quality of classes at NYU is disappointing, largely because the professors are more interested in their particular research areas -- and, in many cases, in getting quoted in the Times or being well-paid consultants -- than they are in teaching or engaging with students. It would be a mistake to be fooled by NYU's big-name profs; many, perhaps most, are incapable of communicating information clearly, effectively, or, most importantly, in an interesting fashion.

NYU is effectively a commuter school -- there is no campus and no sense of community. If you want to be in New York City for a reason other than attending law school, it's a prestigious place to be, but for anyone seeking a sense of community, camaraderie, etc., it's not the right place. The cost of living is sky-high, even in the dorms, and the facilities are overcrowded and run-down (despite the fact that the school is building a new structure). However, NYC is at your disposal, and that's hard to beat. The quality of life *at school* isn't great, but New York is fantastic, and a nice escape.
