Business schools have spent the last few years talking about AI, but more recently they’re starting to redesign entire degrees around it. That’s right, schools are moving beyond simply adding a few AI electives and are instead trying to figure out what business education actually looks like in an AI-driven economy.
A recent article from Poets&Quants highlighted a new wave of AI-focused business degrees designed to teach skills that many traditional programs still struggle to address, such as practical AI implementation, workflow integration, and cross-functional collaboration between business and technical teams. The question we have to ask ourselves is: will all of this change MBA recruiting?
The Problem Business Schools Are Trying to Solve
For years, MBA programs have approached technology from a strategic perspective. What this means is students would learn how technology affects markets, operations, and competitive positioning; however, many programs stopped short of teaching how AI tools actually work in practice.
The problem is now employers are looking for candidates who can do more than discuss AI in a conceptual sense. Instead, they want professionals who can integrate AI into their workflows, interpret outputs, and apply AI tools to business problems. According to Poets&Quants, many schools are rapidly expanding AI-related coursework, though much of it still exists as electives rather than core curriculum.
Let’s look at it this way—if AI literacy remains optional, graduates may leave school with dramatically different skill levels depending on the courses they chose, and this is precisely the problem some schools are trying to solve.
AI-Focused Business Degrees
Perhaps one of the more interesting developments is that newer AI-focused business degrees are emphasizing practical application rather than purely theoretical learning. This might include building AI agents, using automation tools in business settings, applying AI to finance and marketing workflows, and understanding AI governance and ethics.
For example, at New York University Stern School of Business, students are learning how AI affects functions like finance and marketing while also gaining exposure to building AI tools themselves.
Meanwhile, schools like Washington University Olin Business School are explicitly framing new AI-focused degrees around employer demand, arguing that many existing programs simply “recast older courses” without fundamentally changing the curriculum.
This criticism is notable considering there may be skepticism among students and employers about whether some AI-related degrees are truly preparing graduates for the modern workplace, or just simply responding to a trend.
What Employers Want
One possible misconception about these programs could be that they’re trying to turn MBA students into software engineers, but that’s not the case. Most employers aren’t expecting consultants, bankers, or accountants to become deeply technical AI developers. What they do want is professionals who understand how AI changes workflows and decision making.
In particular, consulting firms are increasingly integrating AI systems into research, analytics, slide creation, and operational strategy work. Meanwhile, accounting firms are using AI for audit support and compliance tasks, while financial firms are experimenting with AI-assisted modeling and research.
In all of those environments, professionals need enough AI fluency to use the tools effectively, but also enough judgment to question outputs and communicate findings clearly. That combination is becoming one of the most valuable skill sets in business.
Will AI-Focused Degrees Improve Career Opportunities?
The short answer is (probably) yes, but it’s important to take some things into consideration. Simply having “AI” in the degree title won’t automatically make someone more employable. Employers are likely to care less about branding and more about whether candidates can demonstrate useful, applicable skills.
The candidates who will stand out will be able to explain how they used AI in projects and how they evaluate (and challenge) AI outputs. Along with this, employers want candidates who can improve workflows using AI tools. In other words, execution is more important than terminology and fancy scientific cliches.
Schools might decide that broader integration is more effective than AI degrees. For instance, at Arizona State University W.P. Carey School of Business, leadership has openly stated that AI needs to be embedded across disciplines because nearly every business function is changing.
What we’re seeing here is that the future of business education may not be separate “AI programs,” but rather AI embedded throughout finance, consulting, marketing, operations, and strategy education.
In any case, business schools are clearly entering a new phase of AI education. The focus is shifting from simply discussing AI to teaching students how to work with it in real business environments. The takeaway here is that while you don’t need to become an expert AI engineer, you will need to understand how AI is changing the way business gets done. Moving forward, it’s incredibly important to keep this in mind as you plan your education and future career.
