A new labor market study from Anthropic, the AI company behind Claude, offers one of the clearest looks yet at how artificial intelligence is reshaping knowledge work. The study suggests that the structure of early-career work is changing faster than most students and professionals realize, especially in consulting, finance, and tech-adjacent roles. The reality is that AI is affecting certain entry-level tasks that traditionally served as stepping stones into these professions.

AI Is Taking on Entry-Level Tasks

Anthropic’s study introduces a concept called “observed exposure,” which is a way of measuring not just what AI could automate, but what it’s already helping automate in real workplaces. According to the study, the most exposed roles include:

  • Computer programmers
  • Financial analysts
  • Market research analysts
  • Customer service representatives
  • Data-entry workers
  • Sales professionals

This list might look a little familiar to anyone exploring careers in consulting, accounting, or banking. This is because they all rely heavily on analysis, documentation, spreadsheet creation, and research synthesis. One might call this set of skills the “entry-level toolkit.”

Historically, tasks like the ones mentioned above were how professionals learned the business. Nowadays, they’re what AI helps complete first.

Why Entry-Level Roles Are the First to Change

There’s a reason why AI is reshaping junior work before senior work. Entry-level tasks tend to be repetitive, documentation-heavy, and data-driven. They’re also pretty straightforward and follow simple rules. This type of work is exactly where large language models perform best.

Anthropic’s research confirms that programming and other data-centric roles currently show the highest exposure to automation. That said, exposure doesn’t necessarily mean elimination. Think of it this way—junior professionals are making the move from “producers of analysis” to “supervisors of analysis.”

Professional Services Are Quietly Adapting

It’s easy to assume that AI disruption starts in Silicon Valley, but in reality, it’s spreading just as quickly through professional services. Consider the roles of entry-level consultants or accountants—at the junior level, there’s lots of summarizing and documenting, which are tasks that AI can handle (and is increasingly handling).

This means what makes entry-level professionals valuable in these industries is changing. Of course, firms still need analysts, but now those analysts are required to manage AI outputs effectively. For instance, an entry-level consultant might be asked to challenge or validate AI-generated outputs and translate them into actionable business strategies.

Critical Skills in the Age of AI

By now, it appears that AI isn’t outright replacing jobs, but it is replacing certain steps inside jobs. Anthropic found that many tasks theoretically suited to automation still aren’t being automated yet. This means there is still time to adapt, but ignoring the shift altogether would be a mistake.

Employers increasingly value professionals who can prompt effectively, verify and challenge outputs, and synthesize results into real business decisions. None of this requires coding or technological expertise, but AI skills are quickly becoming differentiators among job seekers and those vying for promotions.

In fact, according to Anthropic’s research, hiring seems to have slowed in roles with higher AI exposure. This aligns with what many professional services firms are already doing, which is hiring fewer analysts, expecting more productivity per analyst, and seeking candidates with AI literacy. With this in mind, candidates who aren’t getting up to speed with AI tools and how they integrate into their role and industry are taking a huge risk.

The Right Moves

So, how should entry-level professionals navigate AI disruption? For starters, learn to work with AI. Employers are now expecting candidates to understand tools like research assistants and workflow automation systems. If you can display even basic fluency, it will signal to employers that you’re adaptable, which is a critical skill in the age of AI.

Now that AI is being used to draft documents in seconds, the ability to interpret outputs is becoming more valuable than the ability to generate them. In other words, having good judgment is incredibly important.

Lastly, industry knowledge may now be a differentiating factor in hiring decisions. Consider this—if AI handles first-pass analysis, what separates one human analyst from another? If you’re on the cutting-edge of what’s going on in your industry, that knowledge just may be what lands you the job.

The bottom line is, entry-level roles are evolving from “Do the work” to “Manage the system that does the work.” In this type of environment, it’s extremely important to show employers you can adapt and leverage AI tools to create value, whether you’re a job seeker or looking for a promotion.
